ANN ARBOR -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team flexed its mid-distance muscle at 600 meters during day one of the Power Five Invitational on Friday (Feb. 1) to go along with a plethora of career-best performances.
Winner Chloe Foster led four women who finished top-eight in the 600-meter final -- one of three top-seeded track finals on the day -- while the duo of Lauren Rodriguez and Sydney McGinley advanced to Saturday's 60-meter hurdle final.
That noon final will kick off action on the track for the second and final day of the Power Five Invitational, which will once again pit the Wolverines against the likes of Indiana, Michigan State, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Kansas and Vanderbilt.
Foster led the fastest heat of the 600 meters from wire-to-wire, holding off hard-charging teammate Lauren Biggs for the win in 1:31.90. Biggs would ultimately finish third overall in 1:32.38.
In the previous heat, Alice Hill and Julia Hall just missed out on the win. Hill came from behind to take third in the heat and fifth overall in 1:32.55 and Hall, who took the race out hard from the gun, was eighth overall and fourth in the heat in 1:32.93.
Rodriguez and McGinley were the seventh- and eighth-fastest qualifiers into the eight-woman final after running 7.98- and 8.00-second races, respectively.
Most of the other events in which Michigan competed were unseeded -- the top-seeded sections of those events will be run during the main program on Saturday (Feb. 2) -- but that fact did not preclude career-best performances.
In the weight throw, Briana Nelson tossed a mark of 19.78m (59 feet) to finish fourth and move to No. 7 in Michigan history for the event.
In the mile, three Wolverines either ran career bests or broke the five-minute barrier for the first time. Julia Vanitvelt was third in 4:55.01 for a new personal record, while fourth-place Jena Metwalli (4:55.24) and Faith Reynolds (4:57.79) went sub-five. Vanitvelt and Metwalli closed strong in the final 300 meters of the faster section to earn their times, while Reynolds got the win in the first section.
True freshman Theresa Mayanja was third overall in her first collegiate pentathlon. She scored 3,347 points, including a career-best 8.90 in the 60-meter hurdles and a high jump that saw her top out at 1.55m (5-1) after clearing two different bars on third-and-final attempts.
The second and final day of the Power Five Invitational begins Saturday at 11 a.m. in the field events, followed by finals on the track beginning at noon.
