MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Sophomore Maggie MacNeil tied the NCAA and U.S. Open records in the 100-yard butterfly (49.26) to highlight the performances for the No. 18-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team at the Minnesota Invite on Friday (Dec. 6) at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. After three days, the Wolverines remain in second place (523.5 points), trailing California (807).
MacNeil, the reigning world champion in the 100-meter butterfly, showed some serious speed in yards on Friday, moving into a tie for the NCAA and U.S. Open records with USC's Louise Hansson (49.26). She took the race out in 23.27, beating California's Izzy Ivey, the second-place finisher, by more than two seconds. MacNeil lowered her previously-held Big Ten and U-M records with the performance. The time of 49.26 is the fastest time in history, and the fastest time swum on American soil.
The 100-yard butterfly was Michigan's top event of the evening, as seven swimmers finished in the top 16. Senior Vanessa Krause joined MacNeil in the final, tying for fifth (53.04 in preliminaries), while freshman Megan Glass cut nearly six-tenths of a second off her preliminaries swim to win the consolation final (53.18). Junior Emma Cleason (10th, 53.70), junior Daria Pyshnenko (13th, 54.19), junior Alexis Margett (54.30) and junior Claire Maiocco (15th, 54.56) rounded out the consolation finalists.
