Michigan Moves on to Big Ten Semifinals with Shutout Victory over Maryland

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 20-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team shut out Maryland, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 3) in a Big Ten Tournament semifinal match at U-M Soccer Stadium. With the victory, the Wolverines advance to the conference tournament semifinals for the first time since 2016.
The No. 3 seed Wolverines will head to Piscataway, New Jersey, to take on No. 16-ranked and No. 2-seeded Rutgers on Friday (Nov. 8) at 1:30 p.m. at Yurcak Field. The match will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
U-M outshot Maryland, 22-6, and put 13 of its shots on frame, while its three goals marked the fifth time that Michigan has scored three goals or more in a contest. Goalkeeper Hillary Beall and the defense earned the sixth shutout of the season.
Freshman Danielle Wolfe scored her second career game-winner, finishing the rebound on a shot from Meredith Haakenson, who also added her ninth goal of the season in the second half. Emma Cooper netted her second career goal.
Big Ten Midfielder of the Year Sarah Stratigakis had two points with assists on both Haakenson's and Cooper's goals, and Wolfe notched a three-point outing with a second assist on Cooper's goal.
Michigan saw a few chances early in the first half finding open players on crosses, but goalkeeper Erin Seppi was there to make the saves in the opening minutes of the match.
Jayde Riviere created an opportunity for the Wolverines in the 35th minute. She brought the ball up to midfielder and launched it ahead to Haakenson, who dribbled the ball down the right flank and fired a shot at Seppi that she knocked away with a diving save. The save caromed out of her reach and Wolfe one-time the rebound into the bottom-left corner of the goal and gave Michigan a 1-0 advantage.
U-M dominated the first half owning 59 percent of the possession and outshooting Maryland, 12-3, with six shots on frame.
Haakenson extended the Michigan lead less than 10 minutes into the second half when Stratigakis found her open on the right side at the six yard box. The sophomore midfielder took one touch on the pass and put it into the bottom half of the net to up the Wolverine lead to 2-0.
The Wolverine added a final goal in the 85th minute. Wolfe won a ball on the left flank and passed it back to Stratigakis, who one-touched a pass into Cooper, and she put a shot into the bottom-left corner of the net with a defender on her right.
