Riviere Overtime Goal Sends Michigan to Big Ten Tournament Final

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Freshman Jayde Riviere scored her first collegiate goal late in overtime to lift the University of Michigan women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Rutgers in a Big Ten Tournament semifinal match on Friday afternoon (Nov. 8) at Yurcak Field.
The victory sets up a match against No. 4 seed Penn State in the tournament final. The Nittany Lions defeated No. 8-seeded Purdue, 2-0, in Friday's first semifinal contest. Michigan will be making its first appearance in the final since 2005.
"I am very happy for the group and for our program," stated head coach Jennifer Klein. "The team set goals at the beginning of the year to win a Big Ten Championship and now they are one game away from that."
"Rutgers is a very good team and a lot of credit goes to their fight throughout the game, added Klein. "We are looking forward to Sunday and the opportunity to play for a Big Ten title."
Riviere roped a shot on the right flank that sailed up and over Rutgers goalkeeper Megan McClelland into the upper-left corner of the net in overtime period to seal the Michigan victory.
The Michigan defense provided its offense with both goals coming from members of the backline. Riviere's goal was the first of her career as was the marker from sophomore Sydney Shepherd in the in the second half. Shepherd also added an assist on Riviere's game-winner. Sophomore Raleigh Loughman collected her seventh assist of the season, serving Shepherd's goal off the corner.
The Wolverines outshot Rutgers, 16-6, and carried 59 percent of the possession time as they won their second overtime victory of the season. Junior goalkeeper Hillary Beall notched her 15th win with two saves on the day, while all three of Shepherd's shots reached frame.
Michigan and Rutgers played an even first half with neither team getting big looks. Junior Alia Martin made a huge slide tackle right inside the 18-yard box in the 15th minute to stop the Rutgers attack and keep the match scoreless.
The Wolverines saw their best chance of the half on their next possession when Michigan appeared to have scored the first goal of the match 4:30 into the contest, but it was called back as a U-M foul in the box occurred seconds before the shot.
Michigan went into the locker room with a 9-5 shot advantage after the first 45 minutes, having tested McClelland on three occasions.
The Wolverine offense pressured to start the second half, firing three shots off over the first five minutes and keeping control in their offensive third.
Michigan's pressure paid off in the 70th minute when it earned a corner kick. Loughman served the ball in from the right corner as Shepherd elevated above the defense and headed a ball down and into the bottom of the net to put U-M ahead, 1-0.
Rutgers scored the equalizer when a clearing attempt inside the Michigan box fell short and Wiltshire fired a shot into the upper-left corner of the net to knot the match at 1 with just over a minute remaining in regulation.
The teams remained at midfield for the majority of the last minute, and the game went into overtime. Michigan outshot Rutgers, 15-6, in the of regulation. Michigan wasted no time offensively, taking control again in its final third.
U-M capitalized on its first opportunity as Riviere fired a shot and locked up Michigan's trip to the Big Ten Tournament Finals.
The No. 3-seeded Wolverines will take on No. 4-seed Penn State on Sunday (Nov. 10) at noon in Yurcak Field. Michigan won the regular season meeting against the Nittany Lions, 1-0, in State College, Pennsylvania, in its Big Ten Conference opener on Sept. 19.
