CHAPEL HILL, N.C. Â -- Freshman Danielle Wolfe scored on a pair of headers to lead the No. 19-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over No. 15-ranked and No. 4-seeded Texas Tech on Friday (Nov. 22) in an NCAA Tournament second-round match at Dorrance Field.
The win sends the Wolverines to Sunday's (Nov. 24) third-round game where they will face No. 2-ranked and No. 1 regional seed North Carolina. Michigan's third-round match will begin at 1 p.m. at Dorrance Field.
"I am so proud of this team and group of young women," said head coach Jennifer Klein. "They showed great fight and composure all throughout the game. Making it to the sweet 16 is a huge step for our program and is well earned."
Wolfe led the Wolverines with the second two-goal performance of her career, while Sarah Stratigakis netted her seventh goal of the season. Senior Brooke Cilley, junior Samantha DeVecchi and sophomores Raleigh Loughman and Skylar Anderson earned assists.
U-M tallied a season-high 12 corner kicks against the Red Raiders and outshot Texas Tech 19-9, putting six shots on frame. Michigan controlled the ball for most of the game, pressing the Texas Tech back line.
Much like in their first-round game, the Wolverines earned a penalty kick in the fourth minute of the match on a hand ball, but the Stratigakis shot hit the post.
The Michigan defense pressed the Texas Tech back line and it paid off in the eighth minute. Loughman took the ball slightly past midfield and got it up to Stratigakis, who brought the ball up the center of the field, made one move past her defender, and ripped a goal into the upper 90 to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead.
Texas Tech responded in the 22nd minute when a short corner and quick passing turned into a goal to tie the match at 1.
The Wolverines had a few more big opportunities in the final 20 minutes of the first half. A Stratigakis shot sailed just wide of the left post, and three straight corner kicks were unable to give Michigan a lead as the teams headed into the intermission tied at 1.
The Wolverines outshot Texas Tech, 8-5, in the first half with three of those shots on goal.
Loughman attempted to give Michigan the go-ahead goal three minutes into the second half when she fired a shot from outside the 18-yard box, but the ball hit the crossbar and bounced away.
Wolfe entered as a sub in the second half and immediately made an impact. Cilley made a pass to DeVecchi, who took the ball into the corner and sent a cross to the head of Wolfe, and she buried the ball down into the bottom of the net. The goal gave Michigan it's second lead of the game, 2-1, in the 63rd minute.
The freshman netted her second header of the match, this time off a cross from Anderson in the 83rd minute. The goal proved to be the game-winner as Texas Tech scored its second and final goal in the 88th minute.
