EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Sophomore Mason Parris captured the heavyweight crown for the second straight year as the No. 19-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team posted eight total placewinners at the annual Michigan State Open on Saturday (Nov. 2) at the Spartans' Jenison Field House.
Parris, ranked seventh nationally, went 5-0 to pace the Wolverines, and, removing a second-round fall, he outscored his competition, 41-7. He defeated a pair of top-10 opponents, including a lopsided 9-2 decision against Central Michigan's fifth-ranked Matt Stencel in the champion bout. Parris scored six out of an early first-period fireman's carry before icing the bout with a single-leg takedown in the third. It was Parris' second MSU Open finals win against Stencel in as many years; the Chippewa ended his season last year in the NCAA Round of 12.
Parris, who captured a junior world freestyle title in August, also earned a dominant 15-3 win against Pittsburgh's ninth-ranked Demetrius Thomas in the semifinals, scoring on two takedowns and eight back points -- four apiece in the first and third frames.
Senior/junior Kanen Storr, who competed unattached while currently in an Olympic redshirt, and junior/sophomore Jelani Embree also reached the finals but dropped championship matches at 149 and 184 pounds, respectively. Storr fell to Ohio State's eighth-ranked Sammy Sasso, 19-4, after using a third-period takedown and 1:56 riding-time advantage to defeat another Buckeye, Ke-Shawn Hayes, 4-3, in the semifinals. Storr went 4-1 up a weight class from his previous three years.
Embree fell to Pittsburgh's fifth-ranked Nino Bonaccorsi, 7-1, in the 184-pound final after giving up a pair of first-period takedowns. The Wolverine avenged a loss from last season with a gritty 10-8 tiebreaker win against Michigan State's 12th-ranked Cameron Caffey in the semifinals. Embree jumped out to a big six-point lead midway through the second period, but after Caffey rallied to force overtime, and used a last-second takedown on the edge to end it in the tiebreaker. Embree also defeated Purdue's 17th-ranked Max Lyon, 5-4, in the quarterfinals behind a first-period takedown and a late escape and locked-hands penalty in the third.
Freshmen Cole Mattin and Cameron Amine placed top-five at 141 and 165 pounds, respectively, in their collegiate debuts. Mattin went 3-2 en route to fourth place in the freshman/sophomore division, while Amine posted a 4-2 mark to claim fifth in the open division. Between the pair, three of their four losses came in overtime, while Amine also dropped a narrow 3-2 semifinal decision to a fellow highly-touted true freshman in Ohio State's Carson Kharchla -- the eventual champion at 165 pounds.
Graduate student Ben Lamantia, freshman Will Lewan and fifth-year senior Jackson Striggow rounded out the Wolverines' placewinners with top-five finishes at 149, 157 and 197 pounds, respectively. Lewan and Striggow went 5-1 on the day but were both unable to compete for third place after reaching their match limit for the day. Lewan, like Parris, defeated a pair of top-10 opponents in his final two bouts, using a first-period takedown to beat Pitt's fifth-ranked Taleb Rahmani, 3-2, and three seconds of riding time to make the difference in a 3-3 second-tiebreaker win against Oklahoma's 10th-ranked Justin Thomas.
The Wolverines will kick off the dual-meet portion of their 2019-20 season at home next Friday (Nov. 8) when they host North Carolina at 7 p.m. at Cliff Keen Arena. Tickets are available through the U-M Ticket Office.
