COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan football team scored on the opening kickoff and put up 21 first-half points en route to a 38-7 win over Maryland on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 2) at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium.
Michigan racked up 331 yards of offense, the fourth consecutive game in which it has gone for 300 yards or more. The Wolverines ran a balanced attack, gaining 176 yards through the air and collecting 155 on the ground.
Quarterback Shea Patterson went 13-of-22 passing for 151 yards and a touchdown, and Dylan McCaffrey finished 3-of-5 for 27 yards. Zach Charbonnet ran for two touchdowns, while Hassan Haskins led the ground game with 60 yards on 13 carries -- one for a touchdown.
Nico Collins was the Wolverines' leading receiver with two catches for 65 yards with a long of 51.
The Michigan defense was stingy once again, allowing Maryland just 233 total yards, 3.4 yards per play and only 2.8 yards per rush. Josh Metellus was the leading tackler with nine, including two for loss, and an interception.
The Wolverines wasted little time -- 11 seconds -- getting on the scoreboard and took a 7-0 lead when Giles Jackson returned the opening kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown.
Michigan took a little longer (4:34) to score on its opening possession. After the defense forced a Maryland punt, U-M took over at the Terps' 41-yard line. Charbonnet capped an 11-play drive with a two-yard TD run to give the Wolverines a 14-0 lead with 8:42 left in the first quarter. Patterson completed passes to Collins (14 yards) and Donovan Peoples-Jones (four yards), and set up the TD with a two-yard run to the 1-yard line.
Charbonnet's TD run was his 10th of the season and set the Michigan record for touchdowns by a freshman. He entered the game tied with Mike Hart at nine.
Maryland moved down the field on 12 plays and took 6:42 off the clock to set itself up in the red zone. However, an interception of a Josh Jackson pass by Metellus on third-and-7 at the Terrapin 12-yard line put an end to the threat with 2:00 remaining in the first quarter.
The Terrapins had the ball to start the second quarter and chewed up 7:05 on a 12-play, 43-yard drive that ended without points at the Michigan 20-yard line when Joseph Petrino missed a 37-yard field goal wide right.

Facing a fourth-and-1 from its own 27-yard line late in the first half, the Wolverines lined up to punt, but instead ran a direct snap to Michael Barrett, who got Michigan 14 yards and a first down. On the next play, Patterson dropped back and lofted a pass to Collins for 51 yards to put U-M at the Maryland 8-yard line. Two plays later, Charbonnet took a handoff, bounced to the right side and scampered in from eight yards out to put Michigan ahead, 21-0, with 1:28 on the clock in the second quarter.
Michigan had the ball with 12 seconds remaining in the half at the Maryland 48-yard line, and Patterson completed a 29-yard pass to Sean McKeon, who went out of bounds at the 19-yard line. Jake Moody came on for a 37-yard field goal, but the kick went wide right and the Wolverines into halftime with a 21-0 lead.
Both teams had a bit of trouble finding any offensive rhythm to start the second half, until Michigan put together a scoring drive midway through the third quarter.
Following a Maryland punt, the Wolverines had the ball at the Terps' 40-yard line with 9:54 remaining in the quarter. Twelve plays later, Michigan took a 28-0 lead thanks to a five-yard scoring pass from Patterson to Nick Eubanks. Patterson was 5-of-8 passing for 38 yards on the drive that concluded with 5:10 to play in the third quarter.
After Maryland went three-and-out on its drive after the U-M touchdown, the Michigan offense went to work again, this time at its own 38-yard line. Following an incomplete pass on first down, Tru Wilson took a handoff and rumbled 39 yards to the Maryland 23. Three plays later, Haskins ran for a 14-yard touchdown to extend the U-M lead to 35-0 with 1:31 to go in the third.
The Terrapins got on the scoreboard on the ensuing kickoff, when Javon Leake returned the kick 97 yards to paydirt to match the U-M touchdown and cut its deficit to 35-7 only 11 seconds later.
McCaffrey, who entered the game late in the third quarter, led Michigan on a 10-play, 23-yard drive that was capped off by a 38-yard field goal with 13:39 left in the game to put the Wolverines ahead, 38-7, and ended the scoring.
Michigan will be on a bye week next week and will be back in action on Nov. 16, when it hosts rival Michigan State at Michigan Stadium. Game time and broadcast network are to be announced. [ Get Tickets ]
