WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Sophomore/freshman Will Lewan and sophomore Mason Parris captured individual titles at 157 pounds and heavyweight, respectively, to headline the University of Michigan wrestling team's effort at the Black Knight Invite on Sunday (Nov. 17) at Army's Christl Arena. The Wolverines placed nine wrestlers among the top six at their respective weights and finished fourth (98.5 points) in the final team standings.
Lewan, ranked 12th nationally, defeated Army's Luke Weiland, 5-2, in the 157-pound championship bout behind a pair of third-period takedowns. He spun behind a Weiland half-shot midway through the final frame and, after a Weiland escape and another single-leg attempt moments later, countered again by locking up a cradle before finishing on a single leg of his own. Lewan went 3-0 on the day and improved to 8-2 on the season.
Parris, named the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler, earned his second win of the season over Central Michigan's seventh-ranked Matt Stencel with a controlling 4-0 decision in the heavyweight championship final. After a scoreless first period, Parris rode out the second then iced the bout with a low-level double leg and 2:51 in riding-time advantage. The Wolverine captain, ranked third nationally, earned bonus points in both of his earlier matches, including a first-period fall (1:42) off an arm bar against Army's Jeremiah Imonode in the quarterfinals. Parris is 9-0 this season.
Fifth-year senior Austin Assad joined Lewan and Parris in the championship round, where he dropped a 17-9 match to Penn State's third-ranked Roman Bravo-Young in the 133-pound final. Assad went 2-1 on the day and rallied from a three-point deficit to earn a 5-4 decision over Maryland's King Sandoval in the semifinal. He took his first lead with a takedown and rideout in the second period and nearly rode out the entirety of the third to ice it.
Junior/sophomore Jelani Embree and fifth-year senior Jackson Striggow rebounded to claim third place at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively. Embree, ranked 17th nationally, dropped a wild 9-8 decision on a late takedown in the semifinals, but bounced back with back-to-back wins in the consolation bracket, including a 5-0 decision against Maryland's Kyle Jasenski in the third-place bout on a takedown, reversal and 4:55 riding time.
Striggow went 4-1 on the day, reeling off three straight wrestleback wins after falling in the quarterfinals, including a 5-2 decision against Central Michigan's Landon Pelham in the third-place bout. Striggow finished on single-leg takedowns in the first and third periods against the Chippewa to flip a loss from the MSU Open two weeks ago.
The Wolverines will host in-state rival Central Michigan in their final dual meet of the semester next Sunday (Nov. 24) at 2p.m. at Cliff Keen Arena. Tickets are available via the U-M Ticket Office, and the dual will be steamed live on BTN Plus.
