ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team capped off the 2019 regular season with a 4-1 victory over Maryland on Sunday (Oct. 27) at U-M Soccer Stadium. The win clinched a top-four spot in the Big Ten standings and the Wolverines will host Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal match next Sunday (Nov. 3).
The Wolverines (13-4-1, 8-2-1 Big Ten) netted four goals or more for the fourth time this season and the third time in October. U-M tallied 12 points in the match with three goals having a pair of assists and Maryland scoring an own goal.
Senior Brooke Cilley and juniors Sarah Stratigakis and Nicki Hernandez each tallied three points with a goal and an assist. Cilley's goal was the first of her career, while Stratigakis leads the team with 21 points (six goals, nine assists). Junior Faith Harper, sophomore Meredith Haakenson and freshman Hannah Blake tallied one assist each.
The Michigan defense surrendered just two shots on the afternoon, and only one reached the back of the net.
In the ninth minute, Harper corralled the ball on a Maryland counterattack and passed it up to Stratigakis in the middle of the pitch. Stratigakis laced a through-ball to Hernandez, who brought the keeper out and placed a shot into the bottom-left corner of the goal to put the Wolverines up, 1-0.
Michigan scored its second goal of the half in the 17th minute when a cross bounced out to Blake at the top of the 18-yard box. She passed it over to Haakenson, and the sophomore midfielder connected with Cilley for her first career goal to give U-M a 2-0 advantage.
The Wolverine defense did not give up a shot over the first 45 minutes while the offense tallied five shots with three on frame.
Maryland's own goal in the 66th minute extended the Michigan lead to 3-0 when a Terrapin defender headed a ball backward into the net.
The Wolverines continued to dominate possession as it quickly got the ball back off the kickoff. Just over two minutes later, Cilley passed the ball ahead to Hernandez, who one-touched a pass to Stratigakis from 12-yards out. She juked her defender to the right and fired the shot into the bottom-right corner of the net and gave Michigan a 4-0 lead.
The Terrapins scored a goal in the final 10 minutes of the second half to close the scoring. The Wolverines allowed just two shots on the day.
Michigan's opponent and game time for next Sunday's (Nov. 3) Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal will be determined after Wednesday's (Oct. 30) matches.
