ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team scored in the closing minutes of the first half and made it hold up in a 1-0 win against No. 2 Maryland on Friday night (Oct. 18) in front of a crowd on 834 at Phyllis Ocker Field.
The win marked the 300th for head coach Marcia Pankratz in her 20 years at the helm of the Michigan program. She now owns a 300-130 career record and ranks 12th all-time among NCAA Division I coaches with a .698 win percentage --- seventh among active coaches -- and 18th in total wins.
Senior Guadalupe Fernandez Lacort used a remarkable solo effort to score the game-winning goal -- her third marker of the season and second game-winner -- at the 28:57 mark. Fernandez Lacort carried the ball into the circle on the left baseline, popped it over the stick of one Terrapin defender, banked it off the stick of another then chipped it over the sprawled goalkeeper into the far lower corner of the cage.
Maryland outshot the Wolverines, 10-5, and narrowly outcornered them, 3-2, after neither team recorded a shot or a corner for the first 22 minutes of the game. Sophomore goalkeeper Anna Spieker posted four saves en route to her fourth complete-game shutout of the season and Michigan's seventh shutout win in nine games.
The Terrapins poured on the pressure after U-M was issued a five-minute yellow card early in the fourth quarter, but Michigan turned away a pair of penalty corners and Spieker earned two saves over the stretch. The Wolverines were again shorthanded when Maryland pulled its goalkeeper with 4:11 to play in the fourth, but U-M did not allow another shot.
After a video referral reversed a called Michigan penalty corner and gave Maryland a free hit coming out with 31 seconds remaining, Fernandez Lacort corralled the ball at midfield, carried it to the left sideline and juggled it past three Terp players to wind down the final seconds of the contest.
The Wolverines (11-3, 4-1 Big Ten) will wrap up the homestand on Sunday (Oct. 20), when they host Penn State at noon at Ocker Field. Admission is free, and the game will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
