Wolverine Bites
• Friday's dual will mark the 111th meeting between in-state rivals Michigan and Michigan State, dating back to the Wolverines' inaugural 1921-22 season -- when MSU was the Michigan Agricultural College. The two programs split a pair of duals that season with the Spartans winning, 20-18, before U-M bounced back with an 18-15 decision. Michigan owns a 70-35-5 advantage in the all-time series with Michigan State.
• With its 6-0 dual record, Michigan is off to its best start in 17 seasons -- since winning its first eight duals en route to a 16-3 record in 2001-02. The Wolverines have defeated two ranked opponents over their opening stretch and have outscored their dual opposition by a combined 169-62 margin.
• Senior/junior Stevan Micic surged to No. 1 in the 133-pound national rankings this week. A two-time All-American and an NCAA finalist in 2018, Micic owns a 6-0 record this season and has earned bonus points in each of his three second-semester appearances, including an 18-8 major decision against Illinois' 18th-ranked Dylan Duncan last Saturday (Jan. 12). Micic only has seen dual-meet action due to an injury suffered at the Poland Open in September that forced him to withdraw from the World Championships. He has earned bonus points in four of his six total appearances this season. Last year, he posted bonus points in 81 percent of his wins (21 of 26).
• Fifth-year senior Alec Pantaleo, who also has seen limited action after missing most of the first semester with mononucleosis, earned his first ranked win of the season with a 10-3 decision over Illinois' 14th-ranked Eric Barone behind four takedowns and 1:25 riding-time advantage. Pantaleo took sixth place at Midlands (Dec. 29-30) at 149 pounds, but will return to and remain at 157 pounds, where he was an NCAA All-American last season.
• All 10 Wolverine starters are ranked nationally by at least one media outlet, including seven who are ranked within the top 10 at their respective weights. Based on their highest ranking, No. 1 Stevan Micic (133 pounds), No. 3 Myles Amine (174), No. 5 Kanen Storr (141), No. 6 Alec Pantaleo (157), No. 6 Mason Parris (Hwt) and No. 7 Logan Massa (165) lead the U-M squad.
• Freshman heavyweight Mason Parris came out of redshirt two weeks ago and has earned three dual wins since, including an 11-4 decision over Oregon State's top-ranked Amar Dhesi in his varsity debut. Parris scored four takedowns -- three in the first period -- against the two-time All-American with 1:31 riding-time advantage. He has followed that with a pair of third-period falls against Arizona State's Brady Daniel (5:56) and Illinois' Deuce Rachal (5:57).
• Before making his varsity debut last season, Parris had placed in all four of his unattached open tournament appearances with titles at the Michigan State (Nov. 3) and Cleveland State (Dec. 15) opens. More recently, he placed fifth at the Midlands Championships (Dec. 29-30) and earned a 9-6 decision over Wisconsin's eighth-ranked Trent Hillger in the quarterfinals, scoring on two takedowns and two reversals. Parris is 20-3 on the season and leads the team with 10 pins. He owns three wins over nationally ranked opponents.
• Fifth-year senior Malik Amine and senior/junior Jackson Striggow both have claimed each of the last four dual-meet appearances, dating back to the Wolverines' dual win against Indiana (Dec. 9), and boast 5-1 dual records on the season. Junior/sophomore Kanen Storr and senior/juniors Logan Massa and Myles Amine also own 5-1 records in dual meets, while Micic, Parris and sophomore/freshman Jelani Embree are unbeaten -- Micic with a 6-0 mark, and Embree and Parris with matching 3-0 records.
• Malik Amine put an exclamation point on the Wolverines' comeback win at Arizona State with a 5-3 decision win against 11th-ranked Josh Maruca at 149 pounds. It was the senior's first win over a ranked opponents this season and his third win in a row. It also avenged a dual loss to Maruca last season that Amine was forced to injury default in the first period.
• Several Wolverines are bearing down on the 100-win milestone. Senior/junior Myles Amine leads the pack with an 82-17 record over his collegiate career. Senior/junior Stevan Micic and fifth-year senior Alec Pantaleo, both of whom have seen limited action this season, are 80-13 and 78-18, respectively, at Michigan. Last season, Adam Coon became the 36th Wolverine wrestler to reach 100 wins, finishing his career with a stellar 116-15 record.
