ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team took a tough 1-0 double-overtime loss to Minnesota on Sunday (Sept. 23) in a Big Ten contest at U-M Soccer Stadium. The Golden Gophers scored the lone goal of the match in the 104th minute.
U-M paced the two teams in shots, outshooting Minnesota, 11-9, with freshman Raleigh Loughman putting two shots on goal for the Maize and Blue. Sophomore goalkeeper Hillary Beall made one save and allowed one goal, but was credited with her first loss of the season.
April Bockin netted the game-winning goal in the 104th minute for Minnesota, putting a shot into the upper-left corner of the net off a pass from Molly Fielder. The Golden Gophers had only one other shot land on net as Nikki Albrecht tested Beall in the second half. Maddie Nielsen earned the victory in net, making four saves on the afternoon.
Minnesota quickly got out to a 3-0 shot advantage before the Wolverines fired off three shots with one reaching goal in the following minutes to even the shots at 3. Hernandez had a look in the 36th minute when she brought the ball across the box and fired a shot toward the bottom-left of the net, but a diving Nielsen made the save to keep the match scoreless.
Hernandez's attempt would prove to be the final of the half for both teams as Michigan held a slight 6-5 shot advantage at halftime.
Neither team could find an offensive push, as only six shots were taken by both teams in the second half. Michigan's best chances came in the 75th and 79th minutes when Meredith Haakenson placed a shots just wide-right of the net and Loughman ripped a shot at the goal that was saved by Nielsen. With neither team finding the go-ahead goal in regulation, Michigan entered its second overtime match of the season, while Minnesota was set to play its second straight overtime match.
The Wolverines found the only shot of the first overtime period when Loughman put her second of the day on net with a shot from the right side of the 18-yard box. Beall made a clutch save on a one-on-one opportunity in the second overtime to keep the match scoreless, but Minnesota responded with the golden goal minutes later when Bockin ripped a shot into the upper-left corner from the right side of the field.
The Wolverines will be on the road Friday (Sept. 28) when they travel to Evanston, Illinois, for a 7 p.m. CDT match against Northwestern.
