ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team announced Wednesday (Aug. 15) its schedule for the upcoming 2018-19 season. The Maize and Blue will host the ITA Kick-Off, Big Ten fall singles championshipsand the spring Big Ten Championship at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Fall
Michigan opens up the fall season with invitationals in the Bahamas and San Francisco over the weekend of Sept. 21-23. On Oct. 1, the Wolverines will head to Tulsa, Oklahoma, for the annual ITA All-American, which will run Mon-Sun., Oct. 1-7.
The following weekend, U-M will travel to South Bend, Indiana, for the ITA Midwest Regional Championships, Oct. 19-23. After the conclusion of regional play, the team will head home to host the Big Ten Fall Championships (Oct. 26-28). Last year at the Big Ten Championships, Harrison Brown and Davis Crocker took home the doubles championship.
Heading into November, Michigan will finish the fall season and will split time between the ITA National Fall Championship and the Lakewood Ranch Invite in Sarasota, Florida, Nov. 2-4.
Spring
Michigan will open the spring dual-match season when they take on Alabama in Tuscaloosa on Jan. 19, 2019. The teams last met in 2017, when Michigan earned a 4-0 win to open the season. Michigan is 7-3 all-time against Alabama. Following that matchup, the Wolverines will host the ITA Kick-Off for the first time in program history. The event will be held at the Varsity Tennis Center from Jan. 26-27. Each team is guaranteed two matches, with the winner of the weekend advancing to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. Michigan is the ITA Kick-Off's No. 1 seed, Baylor is No. 2, Georgia is No. 3 and North Carolina State is No. 4, as the first matches of the weekend feature the No. 1 vs. No. 4 and No. 2 vs. No. 3. The winners will play each other the next day, with the losers also squaring off. Since the ITA switched to this format for the 2008-09 season, U-M has one national tournament appearance, which came in the inaugural season (2009) of the event.
Friday, Feb. 1 will see the Wolverines play host to the Big Red of Cornell. Michigan is 4-3-2 against Cornell and last saw them in 2016, when Michigan clinched a 4-1 victory. The next day, Michigan will face the Oklahoma Sooners. The Wolverines have struggled against OU, gathering two wins in seven all-time meetings. Last season, U-M took a 4-1 loss on the road.
The Maize and Blue will stay at home as they await their matchup with Washington on the evening of Feb. 8. This will be the third of four consecutive home matches for Michigan; the Wolverines are 4-2 all-time against the Huskies after Michigan earned a 4-3 victory last season in Seattle. On Feb. 9, the Wolverines will host Central Florida for the second all-time meeting between the two programs, with the only other matchup coming in on March 3 with Michigan playing to a 4-1 victory.
The Wolverines will then travel to Chicago for the ITA Indoor National Championships, Feb. 15-17.
The following weekend will see Michigan host Notre Dame (Feb. 22) before traveling to Cleveland to take on Cleveland State on Saturday, Feb. 23. The Wolverines faced both opponents in the opening rounds of the 2018 NCAA Tournament.
The Maize and Blue will open conference play on Wednesday, Feb. 27 when it travels to East Lansing to take on the Green and White of Michigan State. The Wolverines have dominated the Spartans all-time, 101-19 in the all-time record against their in-state rival. Michigan enjoys a 15-match win streak against the MSU, with its last loss coming in the 2004 Big Ten Tournament.
The Wolverines will not see game action until March 15 when they travel to Indian Wells, California, for the Indian Wells Championships.
After that, Michigan will travel to Pennsylvania to take on Penn State on Friday, March 22. Michigan is 27-7 against PSU all-time, and looks to improve that record before the Wolverines head back to Ann Arbor for the first time in almost a month when they take on Ohio State on Sunday, March 24.
Michigan has 73 wins all-time against the Purdue Boilermakers and will look to make it 74 when the Wolverines head to West Lafayette, Indiana, to take on Purdue on Saturday, March 30. U-M will stay in Indiana to take on Indiana University on March 31 in Bloomington.
The Wolverines will head home for their last regular-season homestand starting with a matchup against Northwestern on April 6. The Wolverines will also take on Illinois (March 7), Minnesota (April 13), and Wisconsin (April 14) before hitting the road to end the regular season.
Michigan will round up the regular season on a two match road trip with the first matchup taking place against the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Lincoln. U-M will then head to Iowa City, Iowa, to take on the Hawkeyes in the Wolverines' last regular-season competition on April 21.
