ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's gymnastics team announced Tuesday (Aug. 14) the addition of Maile'ana Kanewa-Mariano and Lauren Marinez to its staff.
Kanewa-Mariano is the program's volunteer assistant coach for 2018-19. She comes to Ann Arbor from the University of Oklahoma where she was a graduate assistant in the development office for the Sooners. She graduated with a master's degree in human relations in May.
She also earned her bachelor's in human relations from OU, graduating in 2016. Kanewa-Mariano was a member of two NCAA national championship teams in 2014 and 2016 as a collegiate gymnast. She was the NCAA runner-up on floor exercise during the team's 2014 title run. She was a two-time All-American, earning the accolade on vault and floor in 2014. She won Big 12 vault titles in back-to-back seasons (2013 and 2014).
During her time as a student-athlete, Kanewa-Mariano also was a four-time NACGC/W Scholastic All-American and two-time Academic All-Big 12 selection. She was a member of the captain's table for student-athletes in 2016 and received the Athletics Council Achievement Award in 2015-16.
After she graduated, Kanewa-Mariano served as a student assistant coach for the 2017 national championship team at OU and helped with the team's dance and choreography for floor.
Marinez takes on a part-time administrative assistant role for head coach Bev Plocki. She graduated with a general studies degree in April from the University of Michigan and helped lead U-M to Big Ten titles in each of her four seasons on the team.
As a senior, Marinez won the Big Ten balance beam title and earned second team All-Big Ten honors for the second straight season. She finished her career with six event titles on beam and scored 9.900 or better on 11 routines. In 2017, she was named a NSCA All-American for her work in strength and conditioning and garnered the team's Most Improved Award.
