ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan head swimming and diving coach Mike Bottom announced on Monday (Aug. 13) the addition of Mariella Venter (Johannesburg, South Africa) to the team's 2018-19 recruiting class. Venter plans to enroll mid-year and join the team in January.
"Mariella is a very talented swimmer who has a lot of experience representing South Africa on the international stage," said Bottom. "She has the potential to score big points for the team in the postseason and will give our backstroke training group a real boost. We're thrilled to have her in the fold."
Venter won four medals at the 2018 South African National Aquatic Championships, hauling in gold medals in the 100- and 200-meter backstroke, and silver medals in the 50-meter backstroke and 200-meter IM. She has extensive experience representing South Africa internationally, most recently at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Venter also plans to swim at the Youth Olympic Games this fall in Argentina. Last year, she finished 10th in the 100-meter backstroke and 14th in the 100-meter backstroke at the FINA World Junior Championships, and won gold medals in the 100- and 200-meter backstroke at the Commonwealth Youth Games.
Venter is the sixth incoming freshman and ninth newcomer for the 2018-19 season, joining classmates Allie Klein, Victoria Kwan, Maggie MacNeil, Katie Minnich and Caroline Sisson, and transfers Miranda Eberle, Chloe Hicks and Camryn McPherson.
