PRINCETON, N.J. -- Rising senior Meghan Gutknecht and sophomore Megan Hinkle earned spots on the U.S. Under-23 Rowing Team for the World Rowing U-23 Championships later this summer, the United States Rowing Association announced on Wednesday (July 11). The Championships will be held in Poznan, Poland, and will run from July 25-29.
Gutknecht will row in the Strait Four (4-) while Hinkle will be in the quad (4x), representing two of the U.S.' 22 crews in competition at the five-day event. American boats won five medals at the 2017 World Rowing Under-23 Championships.
This marks the second time Gutknecht has been selected as a member of the Under-23 squad and she is one of 19 returning American athletes overall (male and female). Last summer, she helped her boat finish sixth in Quad Sculls at the World Championships. It is her third overall experience with Team U.S.A. as she also has experience at the U-19 level (2016). This spring, she was a co-captain and remained one of Michigan's most valuable pieces in the first varsity eight boat, earning first team All-Big Ten honors while helping the Wolverines to a runner-up finish at the Big Ten Championship and a seventh-place showing at the NCAA Championships.
Hinkle earns her first U.S. Under-23 roster bid with this announcement, however it is not her first international experience. Hinkle has a pair of top-five finishes under her belt from Youth Nationals. She earned a fourth-place finish in 2016 and finished third in 2017. This spring, she was a staple in Michigan's 2V8 boat despite being a true freshman. She helped her boat finish fourth at the NCAA Championships overall, after earning a silver medal at the Big Ten Championships.
The Championships will be held at Lake Malta regatta course, in the heart of Poznan -- Poland's fifth-largest city. The course is modern and has hosted some of the following large-scale international events in recent years: the 2007 and 2015 European Rowing Championships, the 2009 World Rowing Championships, the 2016 World Cup II and the 2017 World Cup II.
