
Hua Rallies, Advances to NCAA Singles Round of 16; Falls with Knight in Doubles

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- University of Michigan men's tennis senior Runhao Hua won 10 straight games in the second and third sets en route to a 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 upset over No. 5-seeded Patrick Kypson (Texas A&M), Thursday morning (May 24) in the NCAA Singles Championship Round of 32 hosted at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex. After dropping the first set, 6-4, Hua rattled off six straight wins in the second set, then proceeded to go up 4-0 in the third. With Hua leading 5-1, Kypon would not go down without a fight, holding off a double break before cutting his deficit to 4-5. Hua then held off multiple break points and eventually closed out the upset win with a 6-4 third-set victory.
With the win, Hua becomes the first Wolverine to advance to the Round of 16 since Evan King (2013), who went on to advance to the quarterfinals.
Hua improves to 25-7 in singles action, while extending his winning streak to five matches and will continue his season on Friday (May 25) in the Singles Championship Round of 16, when he faces off against No. 9-16-ranked Mazen Osama of Alabama. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m.
Later in the afternoon, Hua and Knight saw their remarkable collegiate doubles career come to a close in the Round of 32, when they were defeated in straight sets by No. 17-ranked Fabien Fallert and Tim Sandkaulen of Mississippi, 6-2, 6-2.
The two Big Ten First Team All-Conference honorees were selected for the NCAA Doubles Championship after putting up a 16-7 record together throughout the season. Throughout their four years in the Maize and Blue, the seniors strung together a career record of 56-25 together, while averaging over 15 wins a season since their sophomore year.
