INDIANAPOLIS -- The University of Michigan men's tennis program will be represented at the 2018 NCAA Championships by seniors Runhao Hua and Alex Knight, it was announced Wednesday (May 2). The duo was selected as at-large singles competitors and as a doubles team.
No. 15-ranked Knight, who was a unanimous first team Big Ten honoree, finished the regular season with a team-leading 25-6 singles record while going 13-4 in dual-match play -- primarily in the No. 1 spot. The Miami Shores, Florida, native also compiled a doubles record of 23-9, with a 15-5 mark in dual-match play. This is the second season in a row that Knight has compiled 20 wins in singles and doubles play, and he became the 10th member in program history to be in the "20/20 club" at least twice.
No. 47-ranked Hua, also an All-Big Ten first team selection, compiled a regular-season record of 22-7 while earning a team-high 16-5 record in dual-match play. The Shanghai, China, native heads into the NCAA Tournament with a 23-8 doubles record and a 16-5 mark in dual matches.
In doubles play the No. 21-ranked duo has compiled an overall record of 16-6 while going 9-3 in dual matches. They have spent the whole season in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings and have been ranked as high as seventh (April 3).
The individual appearances come on the heels of Michigan's third consecutive NCAA Tournament selection and the first time the Wolverines will host the first and second round of the team tournament since 2008. This is the second straight season that Michigan will send a doubles team, as Connor Johnston and Jathan Malik represented the Maize and Blue last season in the individual tournament. The last singles player from U-M to qualify for the NCAA Individual Championships was Evan King, who made three consecutive tournament appearances (2011-13), making it to the quarterfinals in his senior season.
