BRYAN, Texas -- Led by senior Kyle Mueller's eighth straight sub-par individual tally and fifth top-five finish of the season, the University of Michigan men's golf team closed Texas A&M's Aggie Invitational with a 298 team total and a ninth-place finish with a 900 total today (Sunday, April 8) at the Traditions Club.
"The guys did a nice job of surviving the brutal conditions yesterday, especially with a fantastic second round," said U-M head coach Chris Whitten. "We will draw a lot of positives from the second round for sure. I wish we could've finished off the tournament the last nine holes better today, but there were plenty of good things happening this week."
In U-M's second to last regular-season event, the Wolverines got off to a slow start in yesterday's opening 18 holes posting a 311 tally, despite Mueller's 73 (+1). As the 13-team field continued on into the day's second 18, it became a race against time as darkness was closing in fast on the Traditions Club.
As half the field was able to finish its round, U-M did not as play was suspended with the Wolverines having up to six holes remaining. Circling back this morning, the Maize and Blue rally did not stop as it dropped 20 shots posting a 291 second-round team score, led by Mueller's 71 (-1) and an even-par 72 from fellow senior Ian Kim.
Immediately going into the final round in the mid-morning, Mueller remained in position to defend his 2017 individual title as he closed with a bogey-free 69 (-3) to post a 212 (-4) and give him a fifth-place individual finish -- his fifth top-five of the season. Using Mueller's 69, as well as 75s from freshmen Charlie Pilon and Henry Spring, U-M closed with its 900 54-hole team total, dropping two spots to ninth.
After Mueller's top-five, Spring (77-74-75) and Pilon (80-74-74) followed tying for 33rd (226) and 41st (228), respectively. The Wolverines were without junior Nick Carlson, who did not play due to a shoulder injury, missing his first event in three seasons.
"Kyle obviously had another very good week," added Whitten. "He's rarely out of position and it comes down to how many putts he can get to fall. I'm really excited to see what he can do as we head toward the postseason."
U-M will close its regular-season slate heading to Big Ten country. The Wolverines will play in Purdue's Boilermaker Invitational, Saturday and Sunday (April 14-15), at the Kampen Course on the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Indiana. The two-day, 54-hole event will be the final preparation before the upcoming Big Ten Championships.Final Team Standings
