ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team took care of business on Saturday (April 21), beating the Iowa Hawkeyes, 6-1. The Wolverines won the doubles point and took five of the six singles matches in the victory. The win was the Maize and Blue's 10th at home this season and puts their record at the Varsity Tennis Center at 10-1.
Michigan came away with the doubles point, winning at the two and three spots. Senior Alex Knight and freshman Harrison Brown got the first win for the Wolverines at No. 3, followed by another senior/freshman combo of Runhao Hua and Mattias Siimar at the two spot to secure the point. Junior Myles Schalet and sophomore Connor Johnston fell in the one spot.
U-M started off strong in singles play, picking up its next two team points at Nos. 2 and 3. Schalet put his doubles loss behind him and made quick work of his opponent, winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Hua followed suit and dispatched his opponent by the same score. The team victory was wrapped up at No. 6, when freshman Kristofer Siimar took down his opponent in two sets (6-1, 6-4).
The Wolverines' top player, Knight, cruised to a first-set victory but had to fend off an Iowa comeback in the second to win his match at No. 1, 6-2, 6-4. The only setback for the Maize and Blue came at No. 4 where Mattias Siimar fell 6-1, 6-4. The last match to finish was senior Davis Crocker picking up the victory on court five, with the first set going to a tiebreaker, finishing with a straight-set victory 7-6(3), 6-3.
Michigan will be back at home for Senior Day on Sunday (April 22) when they host Nebraska. First serve is scheduled for noon.
