
Wolverines Drop College MatchDay Event to UCF

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The No. 25-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team won the doubles point to jump out to the early lead but UCF won four of the first five singles matches off court to defeat Michigan, 4-2, on Saturday (March 3) at the USTA National Campus. The match was part of the USTA's College MatchDay series and was televised on the Tennis Channel.
U-M jumped out to early 2-0 leads at No. 2 and No. 3, eventually extending the lead to 3-1 at both spots. Michigan fell behind early at No. 1, losing a break point in its first service game en route to a 6-0 UCF win at the top spot.
Moments later, Michigan's No. 3 duo of sophomores Chiara Lommer and Lera Patiuk evened the doubles ledger at one match each with a 6-1 victory.
With attention now on the match at court No. 2, junior Brienne Minor and senior Mira Ruder-Hook battled back from a 40-0 hole in the match's eighth game to regain the break and go up 5-3. Michigan served out the match in the next game, staking the Wolverines the early 1-0 lead.
Michigan won two first sets as the match switched to singles action. UCF evened up the score at 1-1 with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2.
Freshman Alyvia Jones fought off a pair of match points in the second set to send it to a breaker, where she jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Jones held a 5-3 advantage but dropped the next four points as the Golden Knights took a 2-1 lead on the afternoon.
Ruder-Hook dropped a three-set match at No. 5 (3-6, 6-3, 6-1) as UCF extended its lead to 3-1.
Fahey jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the third but was broken to put the match back on serve at 4-3. She responded right back with a break, regaining a 5-3 advantage in the deciding set. She served it out in the next game to put Michigan's second point on the board with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 win at No. 1.
Freshman Bella Lorenzini took advantage of a late break in the second set, grabbing a 6-4 win to split and send her match to a third frame. She won on a deuce point in the fifth game of the set, going up a break at 3-2. She held serve in the next game to preserve a 4-2 lead.
Lommer fell behind a break to start the third set but got back on serve at 3-2, holding in the next game to tie the set at 3-3. She fought off two match points on her serve, keeping the final frame on serve at 5-all. On serve at 6-5, Lommer could not complete the comeback as she dropped the final game to give UCF the 4-2 win.
Lorenzini was still up a break at No. 6 when the match was abandoned.
Michigan continues its road swing next weekend, heading to Texas for matches at Baylor (March 9) and at Texas (March 11).
