FULLERTON, Calif. -- The No. 25-ranked University of Michigan softball team closed out its annual appearance at the Judi Garman Classic with its most lopsided win of the tournament, defeating Cal Poly, 11-3, in five innings on Sunday morning (March 3) at CSU Fullerton's Anderson Family Field. The win wrapped a perfect weekend for the Wolverines, who have won each of their last seven games.
Michigan matched its season-high 11 runs on nine hits, including three home runs and three doubles, and two walks. Senior rightfielder Aidan Falk batted2-for-3 with three RBI, among them a two-run homer in the first inning, while sophomore designated player Madison Uden went 2-for-2 with a double and homer.
Freshman LHP Meghan Beaubien (10-2) earned the victory from the circle, striking out five while allowing two runs on two hits and a walk through 3.2 innings.
The Wolverines grabbed the initial lead on Falk's two-run bomb -- her third long ball of the season -- to right centerfield in the first inning, then broke it open with a six-run second. After scoring on an error to kick off the surge, U-M followed with four RBI hits, including senior first baseman Tera Blanco's two-run double to left center and Falk's RBI single up the middle.
Cal Poly scored two runs in the third inning to temporarily escape the run-rule margin, but Michigan responded with Uden's solo homer in the fourth and ended the game when sophomore Abby Skvarce pounded a pinch-hit, two-run shot to rightfield -- the first of her career -- in the fifth.
Michigan (13-6) will return to the Sunshine State for the third time next weekend, heading to Boca Raton, Florida, for the FAU Tournament. U-M will open play on Friday (March 9), taking on Stony Brook at 3:45 p.m. and host Florida Atlantic at 6 p.m.
