ORLANDO, Fla. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team defeated University of Central Florida, 4-1, as U-M won four straight singles matches after dropping the doubles point at the USTA National Campus on Saturday (March 3) afternoon.
The Wolverines and Knights were playing in the second-annual College MatchDay, during which a crowd of more than 1,300 was in attendance and the matches aired live on the Tennis Channel as part of the network's first live college tennis series. The win is the Maize and Blue's seventh straight dual-match victory.
UCF was able to pick up the doubles point as it won at the Nos. 1 and 3 spots. The Knights defeated the Wolverine duos of seniors Runhao Hua and Alex Knight at No. 1 and freshmen twins Kristofer Siimar and Mattias Siimar at No. 3.Â
U-M got its first point of the match when senior Carter Lin won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 5 spot. Lin's win continues his perfect record (9-0) in dual matches.
Michigan got its second point when Hua also won in straight sets and both by identical 6-2 scores. Hua's doubles partner Knight also avenged the pair's earlier loss by winning in three sets at No. 1. Knight dropped the first set to Central Florida, 6-1, but battled back to win the second set, 6-4, then blanked his opponent, 6-0, in the third set.
The Wolverines secured the victory when senior Davis Crocker won a three-sets battle. Just like Knight, Crocker dropped the first set by a 6-2 score, but won the next two, both by scores of 6-3. The Maize and Blue had the lead in one of the two remaining matches when the match was won.
