The eighth-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team (7-4, 2-2 B1G) hosts the No. 18 UIC Flames on Saturday (March 31) at 2 p.m. inside Crisler Center. The Wolverines will honor a trio of seniors on Senior Day: Dmitri Belanovski, Tristian Perez-Rivera and Brennan Thomas. The contest is believed to be the first regular-season NCAA meet that will be competed on podium.
WOLVERINE BITES
• Michigan enters the meet with a team four-score average of 406.317, which places them at No. 8 in the RoadToNationals and CGA Coaches poll rankings. On individual events, U-M features a top-10 ranking in all six events. The Wolverines are ranked sixth on floor exercise (69.050), ninth on pommel horse (65.983), fifth on still rings (68.467), sixth on vault (70.917), seventh on parallel bars (67.267) and tied for 10th on high bar (65.300).
• Michigan has eclipsed the 75 percent mark on hit percentage on four occasions this season, highlighted by 90 percent at the International Collegiate Challenge meet. Last week against Penn State, U-M hit 26 of 30 routines (83 percent).
• U-M will honor volunteer assistant coach Brennan Thomas, senior Dmitri Belanovski, and sixth-year senior Tristian Perez-Rivera prior to the meet. Thomas competed one season before moving to volunteer assistant coach, while Belanovski is a three-time NCAA All-American. Perez-Rivera, in his sixth year with the Wolverines, earning All-America honors in 2015 and serving as a two-time team captain.
• Freshman Jacob Moore is ranked third in the nation on floor with an average score of 14.390. His highest score on the event is a 14.950, which remains the top score on the event nationally heading into the final week of regular-season competition.
• Junior Emyre Cole also is ranked nationally on floor, coming in fifth with an average score of 14.362. He boasts the third-highest floor score in the country with his 14.70 that he earned at the International Collegiate Challenge (March 3). Redshirt-junior Marty Strech is ranked eighth in the nation on still rings with an average score of 14.100 and owns a season-high of 14.20.
• The Wolverines hosted the Penn State Nittany Lions on March 24, and led through the first five rotations before giving up the lead in the final rotation (high bar). Michigan clipped a new season-high score on vault (72.800) as he swept the event, while three Wolverines earned career-bests on the vault table: Moore (14.65), freshman Nick Guy (14.40) and sophomore Mitchell Brown (14.30). Freshman Cameron Bock tallied a career-high 14.55 on parallel bars while sophomore Mack Lasker took home his first event title and a new career-high (14.45) on pommel horse.
• U-M will host the Big Ten Championships next week inside Crisler Center (April 6-7) when Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio State and Penn State come to town. The last time U-M hosted a championship event inside Crisler Center was 2014, when the Wolverines took home the NCAA team championship. Michigan last hosted Big Tens in 2009 and tied for first in the event, which was also held at then-Crisler Arena. Tickets are available at mgoblue.com.
OPPONENT PREVIEW
• UIC ranks 18th of 20 teams in the NCAA, CGA and RoadToNationals rankings, and are winless on the season. As a team, their four-score average is 364.917, while vault (67.433) and high bar (58.833) are the Flames' top team events.
• Michigan leads the all-time series by a 17-2 margin, with both defeats coming in 1997, the first year at the helm of U-M for head coach Kurt Golder.
