ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- After Michigan claimed its 24th Big Ten Championship on Saturday (March 24), the Big Ten Conference announced U-M senior captain Paige Zaziski as Co-Big Ten Gymnast of the Year.
It is easy for the accolade to get lost in the shuffle when the team is celebrating its fifth straight conference title, but the award is a special one as Zaziski becomes the 12th Wolverine to receive the prestigious honor.
Voted on by the coaches, Zaziski and Penn State's Briannah Tsang split the votes to share the 2018 honor. It is the second straight year U-M has taken the crown with Nicole Artz winning it as a senior in 2017.
"It is such an honor," said Zaziski. "The Big Ten is so amazing and I am really proud to be a part of it."
Zaziski joins elite company that includes Beth Wymer (1992, 94, 95), Wendy Marshall (1996), Sarah Cain (1997, 2000), Elise Ray (2005) Lindsey Bruck (2008), Kylee Botterman (2011), Joanna Sampson (2013) and Artz.
After she transferred from Arkansas following her sophomore year, Zaziski returned to her home state of Michigan and has done everything the Wolverines have asked of her.
She was a regular-season All-American on uneven bars last year and won three NCAA Regional titles. This year Zaziski has been Michigan's top all-around performer, ranked tied for 18th nationally with a Regional Qualifying Score of 39.425.
A first-team All-Big Ten selection and a member of the All-Big Ten Championships team, Zaziski has won eight event and all-around titles this season.
Zaziski is a team captain that has taken charge of the team and led them to another Big Ten title. She is a relentless worker in practice, is an Academic All-Big Ten honoree and volunteers regularly at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital.
As Michigan waits to learn its location for the NCAA Regionals, Zaziski has made the most of her senior year and will look to lead her team to the NCAA Championship like so many of U-M's previous Big Ten Gymnast of the Year recipients.
