COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team got All-America swims from the 200-yard freestyle relay and from senior G Ryan in the 500-yard freestyle to highlight its efforts on Day Two of the NCAA Championships, held Thursday (March 15) at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The Wolverines sit in fifth place (101 points) and ended the day ahead of last year's pace, when they were seventh (74 points).
"We're less than 10 points away from third with two really good days for us coming up," said head coach Mike Bottom. "We're scrapping for every point. This is an incredibly fast meet with world-class athletes in every event, but we're holding our own and fighting for Michigan."
The Wolverines made a move on the second day thanks to their 200-yard freestyle relay, which made the championship final for the first time in 12 years. Michigan, which was 21st in this event last year and didn't score, held its seed from preliminaries and set a school record (1:27.87). Situated in lane one for the finals, the same foursome of Catie DeLoof, senior Gabby DeLoof, junior Siobhán Haughey and freshman Daria Pyshnenko ran down Ohio State in the adjacent lane to move up one spot and finish sixth (1:27.78), lowering the record even further. It is the program's highest finish in that event since 2005 (fifth).
Three swimmers earned second swims in the 500-yard freestyle, led by senior G Ryan, who began their final NCAA Championships with an eighth-place finish (4:42.46). Ryan is the second swimmer in program history to make the final of the 500-yard freestyle in back-to-back seasons, joining teammate Yirong Bi, who did it in 2016 and 2017. Despite going virtually the same time as last year, Bi settled for the consolation final, finishing 13th (4:39.16). Freshman Sierra Schmidt joined Bi there, taking 14th (4:39.71). Junior Becca Postoll was the other individual qualifier, taking 36th (4:43.17).
Michigan closed the night scoring more points via a relay, taking 10th in the 400-yard medley relay behind senior Clara Smiddy, sophomore Miranda Tucker, sophomore Vanessa Krause and Gabby DeLoof (3:30.79). Those four earn All-America Honorable Mentions, as do junior Taylor Garcia and Haughey, who swam as part of the relay during the morning's preliminaries.
Haughey, who had already swum four times on the day by the time she stepped to the blocks for the consolation final of the 200-yard IM, dug deep and dropped about a second-and-a-half from preliminaries to win the heat and finish ninth overall (1:53.53). She was only .05 seconds off her Big Ten and U-M record. Two others swam in preliminaries: Smiddy was 29th (1:57.71) and Tucker was 31st (1:57.83).
Three swimmers took part in the 50-yard freestyle. Catie DeLoof tied for 41st (22.59), Krause was 56th (23.04) and Garcia was 58th (23.18).
The NCAA Championships roll on tomorrow (Friday, March 16) at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion, but with an earlier schedule. Preliminaries will begin at 9 a.m., with finals commencing at 5 p.m. The finals session will be televised live on ESPNU and on the WatchESPN app.
