COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Junior Siobhán Haughey won her second individual title in as many days to spearhead a 1-2-3 finish in the 200-yard freestyle, and three school records fell as the No. 5-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team extended its lead on the third day of the Big Ten Championships on Friday (Feb. 16) at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The Wolverines remain in first place (926 points), with Indiana (787) and Ohio State (742) rounding out the top three.
The Wolverines took control on Friday thanks to another terrific performance in preliminaries, qualifying for 21 second swims, including 12 in event finals. They put their stamp on the evening with a dominant performance in the 200-yard freestyle, putting four swimmers in the final, including three who returned from last year.
As a team, Michigan went 1-2-3 behind Haughey -- who re-set her own Big Ten Championships record (1:41.66) -- and sisters Gabby DeLoof (2nd, 1:42.91) and Catie DeLoof (3rd, 1:43.32), both of whom now sit behind Haughey with the second- and third-fastest times in school history. Senior G Ryan rounded out the finalists in eighth (1:46.44), while junior Becca Postoll won the consolation final for ninth (1:45.63), giving Michigan five of the top nine swimmers in the conference for that event. Together, the five combined to score 129 points.

"That 200-yard freestyle was pretty special," said head coach Mike Bottom. "It started with Becca, again, using her swim in the consolation final as an opportunity to get the team going. We got quite a few best times across the board tonight and many of them came in the evening. They're getting better, making corrections and competing hard. That's all we can ask."
The Wolverines also picked up a bunch of points in the 100-yard breaststroke, championed by Tucker, who set the school record in preliminaries (59.26) and then crushed it in finals, taking third (57.93). She is the first woman in school history to go below 59 seconds and 58 seconds in that event. She was joined in the final by senior Emily Kopas in seventh (59.88) and senior Samantha Yeo in eighth (1:00.22). Two others were in the consolation final: senior Carolyn McCann (10th, 1:00.61) and junior Jamie Yeung (11th, 1:00.71).
The other two school records both came on relays at the end of the night. The 200-yard freestyle relay of Catie DeLoof, Gabby DeLoof, Haughey and freshman Daria Pyshnenko finished runner-up (1:28.00), while the 200-yard medley relay returned to the water for a time trial, seeking to pick up an NCAA cut after Wednesday's disqualification. They got it, and set the school record in the process, as the foursome of Garcia, Tucker, Krause and Catie DeLoof finished at 1:36.92, an NCAA "B" cut.
The Wolverines returned four swimmers in the 100-yard butterfly, outperforming both their incoming seeds and last year's results in this event. Sophomore Vanessa Krause and freshman Emma Cleason held spots in the final, coming in fifth (52.42) and sixth (52.81), respectively. Freshman Alexis Margett came in to the meet seeded 19th and improved on that, taking 14th (53.59). Junior Taylor Garcia qualified 23rd out of preliminaries, but won the bonus final from lane one, finishing 17th overall (53.38).
Junior Yirong Bi, fresh off her win in the 500-yard freestyle last night, rattled the record books tonight, coming within three tenths of the school record to finish fourth with a career-best time of 4:07.75. Freshman Kate Krolikowski had a fantastic bounce-back swim in the bonus final, cutting four-and-a-half seconds to finish 18th overall (4:14.18), while junior Jamie Yeung was right behind her in 19th (4:16.02). Both times were also career-bests.
The Wolverines also put two swimmers in a very fast 100-yard backstroke final, led by senior Clara Smiddy, who claimed the bronze medal (52.08). Garcia (8th, 52.82) and Gabby DeLoof (12th, 52.96) both returned from races earlier in the evening to score, while sophomore Jacqui Schafer added a few more points in 22nd (53.94).
Following a pair of scoring performances yesterday on one-meter, the freshman diving duo of Nikki Canale and Christy Cutshaw did it again today on three-meter, each earning a spot in the consolation final. Canale finished 11th with a score of 337.20, the third-highest score on three-meter in school history and the team's highest three-meter diving score since 2015. Cutshaw also eclipsed 300 in preliminaries, finishing 14th (284.85).
The Big Ten Championships conclude tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 17) at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. Preliminaries begin at 11 a.m., with finals following at 6:30 p.m.
