EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Backed by a career-best effort from junior Katarina Glavinic, the No. 19-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team picked up its first win inside Jenison Field House since 2013 with a 3-1 victory over Michigan State (30-28, 18-25, 25-17, 26-24) on Saturday night (Nov. 17).
The Wolverines (20-9, 9-9 B1G) have now reached the 20-win mark 12 times under head coach Mark Rosen, including each of the last four seasons, and the victory snapped a three-match skid for U-M.
Michigan had three players finish with kills in double figures, including a team-leading 17 from freshman Paige Jones. Glavinic posted a career-best 14 kills with a career-high .423 attack average, and senior Carly Skjodt added 13 kills.
Defensively, Michigan had three players post double-digit digs. Senior libero Jenna Lerg totaled 14, while Skjodt (12 digs) and Jones (10 digs) finished with kill-dig double-doubles.
Glavinic led the front row with four blocks. Redshirt junior Cori Crocker and sophomore Kiara Shannon each added three. Junior setter MacKenzi Welsh guided Michigan to a .240 team hitting percentage with 37 assists.
Michigan took a 4-3 lead in the first set on a kill from Jones and followed with a kill from Welsh and a Skjodt ace to extend the lead to three. After a Michigan State timeout was called with the Wolverines up, 14-11, however, the Spartans rallied with a 4-0 run to take a lead, 15-14. The Wolverines answered with a kill from Jones to tie things up, and back-to-back service aces from Jones put the Maize and Blue back on top, 19-17. The back-and-forth set continued as the Spartans answered with a 3-0 run to come from behind and coerce a Michigan timeout, down 20-19. The teams traded points from there and the frame featured a total of six set points before a kill from Glavinic and an MSU attacking error gave Michigan the first set, 30-28.
The Spartans jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the second set, which forced the Wolverines to take their first timeout early. Michigan State dominated the frame, using a .355 attacking average with just three errors. Michigan surged late with a 4-0 run that included a kill from Jones and a double block from Glavinic and Crocker, but the lead was too much to overcame as the Maize and Blue dropped set two, 25-18.
Down 4-1 to start the third set, Michigan came from behind with a three-point rally to tie the score and used another 3-0 run to garner an 8-6 lead and force an MSU timeout. The Spartans cut Michigan's lead to one point on the next play and again at 9-8, but the Wolverines took control of the set with a 5-0 run. Michigan had three service aces and hit .370 in the frame, with four kills from Jones along with three from Skjodt leading the way to a 25-17 third set win and a 2-1 lead in the match.
MSU took the first point of the fourth set, but a kill from Crocker evened things up before a 5-0 scoring run gave Michigan a 6-2 lead. Following a Michigan State timeout, however, the Spartans surged to tie the score at 10. An MSU service error and a kill from Glavinic put the Wolverines back up by two, 12-10, but the Spartans tied the score five more times before taking a lead, 18-17, and coercing a Michigan timeout. The rest of the frame featured three challenges -- one of which was overturned in favor of Michigan State -- as the teams battled point for point. With the score tied 24-24, a kill from Jones and a Spartan attacking error pushed Michigan ahead for a 26-24 fourth-set win.
