• Following its 21-7 victory at Michigan State (Oct. 20) and the bye week that followed last week, the Michigan football team returned to the top 10 of the national polls for the first time this season.
• U-M heads into the Penn State game ranked No. 5 in both the Associated Press and Amway Coaches polls. PSU is listed No. 13 in the coaches poll and No. 14 in the AP poll.
• Michigan began the season ranked 14th in both national polls.
• U-M has been ranked in the AP poll for 16 of the 22 match-ups with Penn State, including the first 10 games of the series.
• Michigan is 10-5 all-time against Penn State when listed in the top 25 of the polls.
• The Wolverines have compiled a 5-4 record against the Nittany Lions when both teams enter the game ranked in the AP poll.
• Michigan has a 3-1 mark against Penn State when ranked in the top five of the national polls.
Game Notes Nuggets
• U-M's roster features four players from the state of Pennsylvania: Khaleke Hudson (McKeesport), Donovan Jeter (Beaver Falls), Chase Winovich (Jefferson Hills) and Jack Young (Pittsburgh).
• The Wolverines rank first nationally in total defense (220.0 avg.) and pass defense (122.9 avg.), and they also list top-10 nationally in six other defensive categories: pass efficiency, first downs allowed, scoring defense, rushing defense, defensive touchdowns and third-down conversion percentage allowed.
• Offensively, U-M ranks top-30 in five categories: third-down conversion percentage, completion percentage, pass efficiency, scoring offense and turnovers lost. The team is also No. 33 nationally in rushing offense.
• Running back Karan Higdon registered a career-high 33 carries against Michigan State (Oct. 20) in East Lansing, totaling 144 rushing yards for his sixth consecutive appearance with 100 yards rushing. Only Mike Hart (eight games in 2007 season) has a longer streak in Michigan history.
• Michigan improved to 11-0 when Higdon reaches the century mark rushing (6-0 this season). Higdon was also named to the Maxwell Award semifinalist list on Monday (Oct. 29).
• Higdon is up to No. 19 on U-M's all-time career rushing yards list with 2,269 yards. He is less than 300 yards shy of a top-15 ranking.

• Linebacker Devin Bush was announced as a Butkus Award Semifinalist on Monday (Oct. 29). Bush leads the team with 49 tackles and ranks second on the team with 4.5 sacks and 7.0 tackles for loss.
• Defensive lineman Chase Winovich earned semifinalist honors for the Chuck Bednarik Award on Monday (Oct. 29). Winovich leads U-M defensive linemen and is third on the team with 43 total tackles. His 11.0 tackles for loss lead the team and are tied for fifth in the Big Ten, and his 3.0 sacks are tied-third on the roster.
• Last time out, Michigan's No. 1-ranked defense shut Michigan State down in a historic way. The Spartans were limited to just 94 yards of total offense, their lowest figure since U-M held the team to 56 yards in 1947.
• Seven of Michigan's eight opponents this season have recorded a season low in total yardage when playing the Wolverines. Michigan State's previous low, before recording 94 yards against U-M, had been 345 yards of offense against Central Michigan.
• Michigan is No. 7 nationally in time of possession, averaging 34:17 of control per game. The Wolverines have never ranked outside the top 20 in this category under Jim Harbaugh. U-M possessed the ball for more than 37 minutes against Wisconsin and more than 34 minutes at Michigan State.

The start time for Michigan's Nov. 10 game at Rutgers will not be announced until late Saturday (Nov. 3) or early Sunday (Nov. 4), but it will be either noon or 3:30 p.m.
