ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team kept its perfect home record intact with a decisive 6-0 win over Ball State on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 14) in front of a crowd of 344 at Phyllis Ocker Field. The Wolverines earned goals from five different players -- two from senior Emma Way -- to improve to 6-0 at home this season.
Michigan scored early and often in the first half to build a 4-0 lead in the first 21 minutes of the contest. Freshman Sofia Southam used a strong individual effort inside Ball State territory to score the game-winning goal at the 5:33 mark, stripping the ball beyond the defensive 25, carrying it into the circle and sending a reverse chip to the lower-right corner of the cage. It was her fourth goal of the season and second game-winner.
The Wolverines converted a pair of penalty corners less than two minutes apart midway through the half, at 15:10 and 16:49, to break the game open. Way scored the former in similar fashion to Southam, taking the stop from junior Guadalupe Fernandez Lacort, pulling it to her reverse stick in the middle of the circle and burying it to the lower-right corner. Freshman Maya Gompper netted her first collegiate goal on U-M's next corner opportunity, corralling a rebound off the Cardinal goalkeeper's pads and firing it to the board. Gompper is the sixth different Wolverine player to score her first goal this season.
Sophomore/freshman Kate Burney also knocked in a rebound to close out first-half scoring at 20:27. Sophomore Kayla Reed initiated the play with a baseline carry and put a shot on goal that was saved by a defender on the goal line. Burney took the ball away, however, and found the goalkeeper's five-hole for her third goal of the season.
Way added her second goal of the contest midway through the second half, at 50:34, on a corner shot that deflected off a Cardinal defender. It was her team-best 16th of the season and her fourth multi-goal effort. Junior Kate Walker netted her first of the year in the waning minutes of the contest, at 65:38, roofing a reverse chip from the left side of the scoring arc.
Michigan outshot the Cardinals, 33-2, and outcornered them, 14-1. Freshman goalkeeper Anna Spieker and sophomore Sidonie LaPlante combined for the shutout -- Spieker made one save -- while Ball State's Grace Chavez earned 13 saves.
The Wolverines (11-5) will close out the regular season next Sunday (Oct. 21) when they host rival Ohio State at noon on Senior Day at Phyllis Ocker Field. The game will air live on the Big Ten Network. Admission is free to all regular-season home games.
