ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Kayla Reed netted the game-winning goal at the 87:37 mark to propel the No. 7-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team to a 2-1 double-overtime win against No. 21 Ohio State and capture a share of their second straight Big Ten Conference regular-season title on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 21) in front of a crowd of 584 at Phyllis Ocker Field. The Wolverines also completed the regular season with a perfect 8-0 home record.
The Wolverines wrapped up their Big Ten slate with a near-perfect 7-1 record, with their only loss coming to Maryland (2-1), with whom they share the regular-season title. Michigan boasts 10 Big Ten regular-season titles in program history (1997, 2000, '02, '03, '04, '07, '10, '11, '17, '18) -- the second most of any Big Ten school behind Iowa (11).
Michigan largely controlled the two overtime periods, outshooting Ohio State, 3-0, despite being down a player for the first 5:20 of the first frame after drawing a 10-minute yellow card late in regulation. Reed did all the work on her game-winner, getting the ball near the OSU defensive 25 on the right side, taking it to the baseline and carrying it in on goal. She pulled OSU goalkeeper Aaliyah Hernandez out of the cage and put a tight-angle shot on goal, deflecting it off the stick of a Buckeye defender and into the net. It was her second goal of the season.
Reed also contributed to the Wolverines' much-needed tying goal in the waning minutes of regulation. The Buckeyes led late after breaking the scoreless tie on a penalty corner at the 53:07 mark, but Michigan responded 10 minutes later, at 63:28, on a tip goal from junior Meg Dowthwaite in front. Reed hammered the ball into the circle on a free hit from the 25, and Dowthwaite lunged her stick out to deflect it in from the right post. It was her eighth of the season.
Michigan narrowly outshot the Buckeyes, 12-10, but was outcornered, 7-3, in the contest. Freshman goalkeeper Anna Spieker earned four saves in the Wolverine cage, while OSU's Hernandez stopped seven of nine U-M shots on goal.
The Wolverines (12-5, 7-1 Big Ten) will be the No. 2 seed for the Big Ten Tournament and will host a quarterfinal slate against No. 7 seeded Northwestern next Sunday (Oct. 28) at Ocker Field. Game time will be announced when the tournament bracket is released.
