EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team took advantage of a late goal -- awarded on referral -- to edge in-state rival Michigan State, 1-0, on Friday night (Oct. 12) at the Spartans' Ralph Young Field. With the win, the Wolverines improved to 6-1 in Big Ten Conference play to retain their half-game lead in the league standings.
Junior Guadalupe Fernandez Lacort scored the game-winning goal at the 56:45 mark after stealing the ball on Michigan State's defensive 25, carrying it into the circle and firing a shot just inside the scoring arc. The ball deflected off a Spartan defender and deflected into the lower-left corner of the cage. The umpires initially awarded U-M a long corner, but after a Wolverine referral, changed the call to a goal -- Fernandez Lacort's second of the season.
Michigan turned away two sets of back-to-back Spartan penalty corners within the first 14 minutes of the first half, then largely dominated the remainder of the contest, outshooting MSU, 15-0, over the final 56 minutes.
The Wolverines were not without additional scoring opportunities, perhaps none closer than a shot from sophomore Kayla Reed that dinged off MSU's left post midway through the first half.
In all, Michigan outshot the Spartans, 16-2, and outcornered them, 6-4. Freshman goalkeeper Anna Spieker did not have to make a save to earn her third complete-game shutout of the season, while Michigan State's Jade Arundell stopped seven of eight U-M shots on goal.
The Wolverines (10-5, 6-1 Big Ten) will wrap up the weekend at home on Sunday (Oct. 14), hosting Ball State at 1 p.m. at Phyllis Ocker Field. Admission is free to all regular-season home games.
