MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Freshman Sarah Stratigakis scored the game-tying goal with 11 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime, and the University of Michigan women's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw with Minnesota on Thursday (Sept. 21) at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
With time running down in regulation, junior Reilly Martin knocked a ball back to junior/sophomore Katie Foug, who played a long ball over the top from beyond midfield. Stratigakis ran on and got a touch around Minnesota's keeper, who was 25 yards out. With an open net, Stratigakis sent the ball toward the goal as she slid to the turf, and the ball slowly rolled just inside the left post to tie the game with 11 seconds remaining.
With both teams exhausted after playing 110 minutes of gritty, Big Ten soccer in unusually hot September weather, the game ended in a draw.
The Wolverines went to double overtime for the fourth time and have played an extra 80 minutes of soccer this season, tying all four of those matches.
The Gophers pressured early in the match, outshooting the Wolverines 11-1 through the first 25 minutes of play.
Michigan was eventually able to get forward as sophomore Jada Dayne played a long ball over the top to Stratigakis, who held the ball just long enough before chipping it in behind Minnesota's defense. Foug ran onto it and beat Gopher goalkeeper Kailee Sharp to the ball, punching it into the lower right corner to give U-M the 1-0 lead in the 27th minute. It marked Foug's first goal of the season and her second consecutive game with a point, as she assisted on U-M's first goal in its 2-1 win over Indiana (Sept. 17).
Minnesota held a 16-2 advantage in shots in the first half but put just three on goal, all of which Michigan goalkeeper senior Sarah Jackson saved.
Minnesota once again pressured early in the second half, as Gopher April Bockin got off a shot from 12 yards out in the 49th minute and Jackson made a diving save to her right to push the ball out of play. Jackson continued her stellar play over the next 25 minutes, making several saves to keep the Gophers off the board.
In the 76th minute, Minnesota finally broke through on its 26th shot of the match, as Julianna Gernes capitalized on a loose ball near the goal line to tie the game, 1-1. Ten minutes later, Gernes notched the go-ahead goal with 4:13 remaining in regulation.
Overall, Minnesota held a lopsided 39-7 advantage in shots. Jackson finished the night with a season-high 10 saves, just one shy of her career-high 11 saves she recorded in last year's regular-season meeting with the Gophers.
Michigan will continue its weekend road swing, playing at No. 9 Wisconsin on Sunday (Sept. 24) at 1 p.m. CDT. The game will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
