MADISON, Wis. --Junior Reilly Martin scored the golden goal in the 96th minute to help the University of Michigan women's soccer team upset No. 9 Wisconsin, 2-1, on the road Sunday (Sept. 24) at McClimon Track/Soccer Complex.
It marked U-M's first victory over a top-10 opponent since Sept. 14, 2014, when the Wolverines took down Wisconsin, 2-1, in Ann Arbor when the Badgers were also ranked ninth at the time. Overall, the Maize and Blue has gone to overtime in five of last nine games, with today's match being the first that has not ended in a draw, as U-M is 1-0-4 in overtime this season.
The Michigan win also gave Wisconsin its second loss of the season and its first loss in Big Ten play.
In the 96th minute, Martin received the ball from freshman Sarah Stratigakis and carried it across the top of the penalty box until she created enough room to get off a left-footed shot, firing it into the bottom right corner of the goal to give Michigan the sudden-victory win.
"We have big-time players for big-time moments and Reilly (Martin) is one of those," said head coach Greg Ryan. "We have a lot of players stepping up in big moments and today was Reilly's time. She dribbled through three or four Badgers and found enough space to get that shot off. Reilly is the type of player that wants the ball when the game is on the line, and she showed you why today."
Wisconsin controlled the majority of possession in the first half, outshooting Michigan 10-1 through the first 35 minutes. However, despite the lopsided shot count, it was the Wolverines who broke through first in the scoring column. U-M drew a corner, and Martin's serve was batted around in the six-yard box and redirected by junior/sophomore Katie Foug before sophomore Jada Dayne punched it in from close range, giving her three goals on the season.
At the end of the opening half, Wisconsin held a 12-2 advantage in shots, but Michigan senior goalkeeper Sarah Jackson had stopped all six shots on goal from the Badgers.
In the 55th minute, a Wisconsin player was inadvertently taken down in the top corner of the box, giving the Badgers a penalty kick, which Dani Rhodes converted to tie the game, 1-1.
Michigan pressured late in the second half, drawing several corner kicks and getting off several shots in the final 10 minutes, but the game remained tied through the end of regulation.
Jackson finished with seven saves to tally her first win of the season in goal (1-1-2).
Eight of Michigan's 14 players that saw game action played all 96 minutes in unseasonably hot temperatures that were pushing 90 degrees.
"The way our kids tactically managed the game and the heat, I thought we got stronger as the game went on," Ryan added. "We started creating chances later in the game and that was because the kids managed their energy so well."
With five starters missing today's match due to injury, several players stepped up into vital roles and contributed high-quality minutes in the win.
"I didn't know if after double overtime at Minnesota if we had another great performance in us, but clearly we did. It was a great day for the whole team, especially our young players to show that they can stand on their own, take on starting roles and do really well."
After earning four points on the road this week, Michigan will now return home to host Iowa on Friday (Sept. 29) at 7:30 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium. The match will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
