ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Backed by a season-high .352 team attack percentage, the No. 19-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team defeated New Hampshire in straight sets (25-19, 25-13, 25-18) Saturday afternoon (Sept. 2) to remain perfect through the first two matches of the Michigan Invitational inside Cliff Keen Arena.
Michigan, which has not lost a set while starting the tournament 2-0, will wrap up the weekend with a final match at 7:30 p.m. tonight against Green Bay.
When the first whistle blew, New Hampshire jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead to begin the match and force a Michigan timeout. Despite the surge, however, junior libero Jenna Lerg led the Wolverines with a serving run that put Michigan within one point at 8-7. From that point, the set was close, but it was a kill by sophomore Cori Crocker that tied the score at 17-17 and another kill by junior Carly Skjodt that gave Michigan the lead. A service ace by sophomore MacKenzi Welsh then extended the Wolverine lead to two and gave Michigan the needed momentum to take the set by a 25-19 score.
With a 1-0 lead in hand, Michigan took the first point of the second set and rallied to a 10-4 edge before the first New Hampshire timeout was called. From there, the Wolverines continued to dominate the set with a .406 attack average and cruised to a 25-13 second-set victory.
Though New Hampshire came out swinging to take the first point of the third set, the Maize and Blue recovered quickly to go up 9-4. Five kills by Crocker and two by redshirt freshman Ellie Brooks in her career debut propelled Michigan to a 25-18 third-set win and a sweep of the Wildcats.
Overall, Skjodt led all players in the match with 10 kills and was the only player to finish in double figures. Adeja Lambert (.375 attacking) and Crocker (.471 attacking) added nine kills apiece, while Katherine Mahlke totaled seven for the match.
Defensively, Welsh led Michigan with 11 digs, while Lerg finished with 10 and Skjodt picked up eight. Crocker led the Wolverines in blocking with five total blocks.
