TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Five current or former members of the University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team are in Taipei for the 2017 World University Games, being held Aug. 20-27 at the National Taiwan Sport University Arena.
Representing the United States are alum Ali DeLoof (2013-16) -- one of the two captains for Team USA's women -- and newcomers Miranda Tucker and Sierra Schmidt. Siobhán Haughey and Jamie Yeung are swimming for Hong Kong. University of Michigan associate head coach Rick Bishop is an assistant coach for Team USA.
MGoBlue.com will provide daily updates following the action in Taiwan (event finals will start at 7 a.m. EDT each day).

Schmidt closed out the World University Games with a bronze medal in the 400-meter freestyle (4:09.82). The second seed coming out of the morning's preliminaries, Schmidt held off a late charge from Italy's Simona Quadarella for the third spot on the podium.

Elsewhere, Tucker improved her seed in the 50-meter breaststroke final, finishing sixth (31.60). A single tenth-of-a-second separated third through sixth in the race. She and DeLoof swam on the 4x100-meter medley relay in the morning, helping Team USA secure the top seed. They did not swim in finals, as Team USA finished second.
Friday, Aug. 25
It was a golden Friday, as DeLoof and Haughey each won events. Haughey claimed her second gold medal of the meet, setting a new World University Games record in the 200-meter freestyle (1:56.71). She was second at the halfway mark, but took control by 150 meters, eventually winning the race by nearly a second over Team USA's Katie Drabot.
DeLoof held up her top seed in the 50-meter backstroke, tying with the Netherlands' Kira Toussaint for gold (28.07). She actually had the slowest reaction time off the blocks of anyone in the final (0.84). Less than three tenths-of-a-second separated first through sixth in one of the closest finishes all week.

Thursday, Aug. 24
After a disappointing finish in Wednesday's 100-meter backstroke final, DeLoof will have another shot at the medal stand in the 50-meter backstroke, earning the top spot in the semifinals (28.09), finishing two hundredths-of-a-second ahead of USA teammate Hannah Stevens. Haughey, meanwhile, dropped nearly two seconds from preliminaries to semifinals, posting the fastest time in the 200-meter freestyle semifinals (1:58.71). She finished fifth in the same event at last month's FINA World Championships in Budapest (1:55.96), making her a top contender for the medal stand on Friday.
Wednesday, Aug. 23
Three swimmers were in action on Wednesday. DeLoof entered the evening as the top seed in the 100-meter backstroke and was second at the turn, but she lost some steam coming home and ended up finishing fifth (1:01.22). Tucker qualified for the semifinals of the 200-meter breaststroke but missed the final by one spot (ninth, 2:29.39). Yeung finished 25th in the 200-meter breaststroke (2:38.19) and swam the second leg on Hong Kong's 4x200-meter freestyle relay.
Tuesday, Aug. 22
Haughey picked up Hong Kong's first medal of the World University Games, winning the 100-meter freestyle (54.10). The junior came in as the top seed and did not relinquish control, holding off a pair of Russians to reach the top of the podium.
