LUCERNE, Switzerland -- U-M alumnae Felice Mueller (2012, single sculls) and Ellen Tomek (2006, double sculls) each earned top-six finishes competing for Team USA at the World Rowing Cup III Final on Sunday (July 9). Rowing on the waters of the Rotsee in Lucerne, Mueller finished fourth and Tomek and her partner Meghan O'Leary (University of Virginia) finished sixth.
Mueller, who serves as a volunteer assistant coach with the Wolverines, is competing in the fifth World Rowing Cup of her decorated international career. She earned her spot in the final after a string of second-place finishes, timing 7:35.450 to advance out of the fourth preliminary heat, 7:53.390 in her quarterfinal race and 7:37.320 in the A/B 2 semifinal.
She finished the final in 7:29.17, just nine hundredths of a second (.09) off third place and +3.95 off the winner, Jeannine Gmelin of Switzerland. Her fourth-place finish earned four points for her country in the team standings.
Tomek has a wealth of international experience as well, with this competition marking her ninth World Rowing Cup opportunity.
To advance to today's final, Tomek and O'Leary timed 6:49.940 in the third heat and 6:55.880 in their A/B 1 semifinal. The pair finished sixth this morning by virtue of a 6:59.600 time in the final, +9.4 seconds behind the winning boat from New Zealand (Brooke Donoghue, Olivia Loe).
International representation for U-M does not end here. The Wolverines will be represented by Tessa Yurko (2017) and current Wolverines Kendall Brewer and Meghan Gutknecht in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, July 19-23 at the 2017 World Rowing Under-23 Championships. Incoming freshman Kate Burns, an Ann Arbor native, will also compete at the 2017 World Rowing Junior Championships from Aug. 2-6 in Vilnius, Lithuania.
