NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships
Thursday, May 25 -- First Round (Athens, Ga.), Time TBA
The University of Michigan men's tennis team will have one doubles team in the 2017 NCAA Individual Championships as the draws were announced on Tuesday (May 23).
Senior Jathan Malik and freshman Connor Johnston will compete in the doubles tournament, which is a 32-person draw that begins on Thursday (May 25) at Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia. Match time will be announced following the singles matches.
The duo will face No. 25-ranked Jerry Lopez and Reese Stalder from TCU, and then the winner will take on either the tandem of No. 5-ranked Filip Berger and Florian Lakat (Cal) or No. 20-ranked Spencer Fruman and Nick Stachowick (Duke) in the round of 16.
The No. 29-ranked combination of Malik and Johnston have an 11-6 record heading into the tournament while being as high as 11th nationally according to the USTA national rankings.
The individual appearances come on the heels of Michigan's second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament. U-M knocked off Valparaiso in the first round before falling to No. 16 Stanford in the second round by a 4-1 margin to finish the season with a 23-7 record. It is the first time since the 2011 season that Michigan has sent a doubles team to the NCAA Individual Championships, the last duo being Jason Jung and Evan King, who made back-to-back appearances (2010-11).
