ATHENS, Ga. -- Steven Bastien's season-opening decathlon at the Georgia Bulldog Decathlon came to an early end Sunday (April 9) as the lone University of Michigan men's track and field team student-athlete in action this weekend could not advance past the eighth event of the day, the pole vault, at Spec Towns Track.
After opening the second of two days in the 10-event competition with a career-best 14.77 in the 110-meter hurdles and a solid showing in the discus, Bastien was unable to clear his opening height in the pole vault.
The All-American went out after three consecutive missed attempts at 4.27m (14-0) and did not continue to contest the javelin and 1,500 meters.
Though he will not leave Athens with a score to qualify him for this summer's NCAA Outdoor Championships, he did add three new career bests to his résumé.
In addition to his hurdles performance on Sunday, Saturday (April 8) saw him establish PRs in the shot put (12.98m / 42-7) and at 400 meters (47.50).
The full team returns to action this upcoming weekend with the distance runners heading to the Mt. SAC Relays on Thursday through Saturday (April 13-15) and the sprinters, jumpers and throwers competing at the Texas Invitational on Friday and Saturday (April 14-15).
