ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 15-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team clinched the doubles point and got straight-set wins from their top three in singles play to take down No. 32 Minnesota, 5-2, on Friday evening (April 7) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
The Wolverines claimed the doubles point for the 14th time this season with wins on courts two and three. The duo of Alex Knight and Runhao Hua improved to 9-3 with a 6-3 victory at No. 2, while Myles Schalet and Kevin Wong teamed up at No. 3 for a 6-3 triumph to clinch the doubles point. The 10th-ranked doubles pair of Jathan Malik and Connor Johnston held a 5-3 advantage at No. 1 over the 69th-ranked duo of Matic Spec and Felix Corwin until the match was abandoned after the point was clinched.
In singles play, Michigan's top three made quick work in securing the match, with all three winning in straight sets. On court one, Malik claimed the Wolverines' first singles point with a 6-2, 6-0 win, while Schalet took court three, 6-4, 6-3. Knight earned his team-leading seventh victory and clinched Michigan's 15th win of the season with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph at No. 2.
The Maize and Blue also claimed a point by Hua on court four with a score of 6-2, 7-5.
Michigan will conclude a three-match weekend at the Varsity Tennis Center with a doubleheader against Wisconsin and Aquinas on Sunday afternoon (April 9) at noon and 5 p.m., respectively. Admission is free.
