EATONTON, Ga. -- The University of Michigan men's golf team finished in 13th place at the Linger Longer Invitational, which wrapped up Tuesday (March 21) at the par-72, 7,703-yard Great Waters Golf Course. Michigan played in its fourth tournament of the spring and now has a pair of tournaments remaining before the Big Ten Championships.
"After getting off to a pretty good start, we struggled to get in a rhythm these last two days," U-M head coach Chris Whitten said. "The course definitely played tougher in rounds two and three, but I thought we just took too many high numbers, and that canceled out some of the good things we did. The guys really fought and were constantly trying to right the ship."
Junior Kyle Mueller, playing in his home state, led Michigan with rounds of 66-71-74=221, tying for 10th place. Mueller had a share of the lead after 18 holes as his 66 was a season-low round.
"Kyle really started out the tournament great with a 66 and then scraped his way back in the final two rounds after poor starts in each," Whitten commented. "This was one of his better putting tournaments of the year, and that is something he has really worked hard on to improve at home.
Senior Reed Hrynewich tied for 56th opening with a pair of 73s. Classmate Tom Swanson finished in 59th place. He shot a four-under 68 in the first round and was tied for eighth after 18 holes of play. Sophomore Nick Carlson and junior Ian Kim finished 63rd and tied for 80th, respectively.
Baylor ran away from the field, winning the tournament by 15 strokes over Virginia. Georgia's Greyson Sigg won the individual crown with a three-round total of 200.
Michigan will travel to Bryan, Texas, to take part in the Aggie Invitational April 1-2 at the Traditions Club.
"I know we will use this as extra motivation to get ready for Texas A&M, which is a similar golf course," Whitten concluded. "We will expect to play some great golf there."
