ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan softball team took advantage of a big first inning to knock off Bowling Green, 7-1, and claim its fourth straight home win on Tuesday (March 21) in front 956 fans at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field.
Junior designated player Amanda Vargas headlined the Wolverines' offensive efforts, tallying two-run singles in the first and third frames, to finish with two hits and four RBI. Sophomore rightfielder Natalie Peters and senior third baseman Lindsay Montemarano also posted two hits apiece.
Junior RHP Tera Blanco (10-2) was solid in a complete-game effort from the circle, striking out eight Falcon batters while allowing one run on five hits and one walk.
Michigan jumped on the Falcons early, loading the bases on a two-out fielding error before plating runs in three successive at-bats in the first inning. Senior shortstop Abby Ramirez took a low pitch off her front foot -- the next pitch after the error -- while Montemarano and Vargas tallied back-to-back RBI singles; the latter a well-placed looper to shallow leftfield.
Vargas drove in two more in her next turn in the third inning, chopping a two-run single over the Falcon second baseman's head and into shallow rightfield.
The Falcons spoiled Blanco's shutout bid in the top of the fifth, scoring on a run off of three hits, but Michigan responded in kind in the home half when sophomore catcher Katie Alexander bombed a no-doubt solo home run into the trees beyond the left-centerfield fence for her first long ball of the season.
The Wolverines (18-7-1) will play a second straight midweek MACtion game tomorrow (Wednesday, March 22), hosting Washtenaw County rival Eastern Michigan at 4 p.m. at Alumni Field. Tickets are still available through the U-M Ticket Office.
