ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan won three singles matches in a five-minute span to put away a 4-0 shutout of Drake on Friday evening (March 10) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
U-M took the early lead by virtue of the doubles point, taking early breaks on all three courts. U-M's No. 1 duo of seniors Kevin Wong and Jathan Malik came away with the first win, taking a 6-2 victory on a Drake double fault.
It was a double fault on the final point at No. 3 as well, with junior Carter Lin and sophomore Gabe Tishman breaking in the last game in a 6-3 win to wrap up the first point.
U-M took all six first sets in singles action, including tiebreak wins from Malik, sophomore Myles Schalet and junior Davis Crocker.
Junior Runhao Hua fought off a set point trailing at 5-4 in the second set and responded with three straight games to put U-M's second point on the board with a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 4.
Over on courts No. 1 and No. 3, Malik and Wong held concurrent match points. Wong was first to finish, taking a 7-1 victory in a second-set tiebreaker.
