MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team came up short in a back-and-forth battle at Wisconsin, 6-4, Saturday night (Feb. 18) at the Kohl Center.
In the first minute of play in the contest both teams were able to find the back of the net, as Wisconsin kicked off the scoring eight seconds into the game by Trent Frederic. Thirty-five seconds later it would be Michigan's turn when junior forward Tony Calderone found freshman James Sanchez in front of the net for his fifth goal of the season.
Michigan took its first lead of the weekend at the 4:40 mark of the first period when junior Niko Porikos found classmate Cutler Martin in the top of the slot, and Martin proceeded with a blazing shot past the Badger keeper's glove side for his fifth of the season.
Two minutes into the second period Aidan Cavallini broke the tie to give the hosts a 3-2 lead. The edge was short-lived, however, as sophomore Joseph Cecconi tied it back up with his first collegiate goal, a snipe from the point that found its way through a crowded front of the net.
Jake Linhart regained the lead for Wisconsin at the 7:36 mark of the final period, but less than a minute later freshman forward Adam Winborg countered for the Wolverines to tie it at four apiece on a tip-in from a Luke Martin shot from the point.
Peter Tischke gave Wisconsin the eventual game-winner at the 11:03 mark of the third period, and then Cavallini capitalized on the empty net with 37 seconds left on the clock to put the game out of reach for the Wolverines.
Michigan held the shot advantage, 38-29, while senior goaltender Zach Nagelvoort made 23 saves in net for the Wolverines.
The Maize and Blue will travel to Ohio State next weekend (Feb. 24-25) for its final regularseason road trip of the season. Michigan split its two-game series with No. 11 Ohio State earlier this month, taking the first game, 5-4, and dropping the second, 6-5.
