NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The No. 18-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team won the doubles point and four out of six singles matches to take a 5-2 victory over Columbia University on Saturday (Feb. 11).
In doubles, Michigan was able to secure the first point of the match with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. The duo of Jathan Malik and Connor Johnston won their second match in a row while upsetting No. 14-ranked Victor Pham and Richard Pham, 7-5. At No. 2, Runhao Hua and Alex Knight improved to 4-0 on the season by capturing a win over No. 30 Shawn Hadavi and Jackie Tang, 6-3.
The Lions evened the score at one-all with a win at No. 2 singles, before Carter Lin gave the Maize and Blue the one point advantage again with a win at No. 6 (6-2, 7-6).
Columbia gained its second and final point of the match with a win at No. 3 singles before Michigan went on to take victories at No. 5, No. 1 and No. 4, respectively.
Hua put U-M's third point on the scoreboard with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 5, while Malik pulled off the upset over No. 87-ranked Victor Pham at No. 1 (6-3, 6-2) to clinch the team victory.
Knight also picked up a victory at No. 4, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, to claim the Wolverines' fifth and final point.
Up next for the Wolverines is a home match against Kentucky next Saturday (Feb. 18). The following weekend, Michigan will go on its West Coast swing, traveling to Cal Poly (Feb. 26) and California (Feb. 28). U-M will wrap up the trip with a neutral-site match against Oklahoma State on March 2.
