ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team was defeated by Michigan State, 4-1, Saturday (Feb. 11) on the second night of a Big Ten Conference weekend series.
Both teams were scoreless in the first period, but Michigan State took the lead on a goal from Rhett Holland just over seven minutes into the second period. The Spartans added another goal in the second period from Zach Osburn, then extended their lead to three on Taro Hirose's goal in the final minute of the second period.
Michigan State added a fourth goal from Mason Appleton just under a minute into the third period. The Wolverines tried to put together a comeback in the third period but came up empty on their three power-play opportunities. Michigan eventually added a goal in the game's final seconds from Griffin Luce, his first career goal for the Maize and Blue.
Freshman goaltender Jack LaFontaine made 18 saves in net for the Wolverines before senior Zach Nagelvoort entered the game and finished with 12 saves in the relief effort. The Spartans held the shot advantage, 34-24.
Michigan will return to the ice next Friday (Feb. 17) in a conference road series at Wisconsin. The Wolverines are 1-1 against the Badgers this season.
