Michigan's Comeback Attempt Falls Short at No. 9 Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. -- The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team's rally fell short in a 7-3 loss at the hands of No. 9-ranked Wisconsin on Friday night (Nov. 17) at the Kohl Center.
Wisconsin jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, finding the back of the net 33 seconds into the contest. Josh Ess found the puck at the top of the left faceoff circle on a broken clear attempt and threw it in front of a crowded Michigan net to give the hosts an early advantage.
The Badgers added to their lead at the 11:17 mark of the first period off a Max Zimmer backhanded play after proceeding to bring the puck through the offensive zone.
Michigan's best opportunity of the opening stanza came at the 10-minute mark when senior captain Tony Calderone received a pass from linemate Cooper Marody on an odd-man rush, but the shot sailed just wide of the net.
The start of the second period saw U-M begin play with a man advantage after a Wisconsin penalty at the end of the opening stanza. The Wolverines capitalized on the power-play opportunity and the cut the deficit to 2-1 when Marody found Calderone on the back door for his team-leading eighth goal of the season.
The momentum was be short-lived, however, as the home side regained a two-goal lead (3-1) minutes later when Trent Frederic picked up a rebound off a Wyatt Klynuk shot from the point.
Coming off a five-on-three penalty kill, the Wolverines nearly added another to the scoreboard when sophomore forward Will Lockwood found classmate Jake Slaker coming out of the box on a breakaway attempt, but the shot hit the far post.
On the ensuing play Wisconsin added to its lead with a power-play goal by Cameron Hughes on a one-timer from the right faceoff dot.
It was Calderone again to find the back of the twine for the Maize and Blue, tallying his second goal of the evening at the 14:30 mark of the second period with a snipe high glove-side from the right faceoff circle. Marody and fellow linemate Dexter Dancs recorded assists on the play.
Six minutes and 29 seconds into the third period the Badgers extended their advantage to 5-2 when Jason Ford tucked one in the upper portion of the net.
After an apparent Michigan goal was overturned due to goaltender interference, the Maize and Blue found redemption off the stick of Joseph Cecconi to make the score 5-3 at the 10:38 mark in the final stanza. The junior defenseman received a wide-open pass from Lockwood on the point, then proceeded to snipe a slapshot past the blocker side of the Wisconsin keeper.
Wisconsin added an empty-net goal at with 2:10 remaining in the contest and then another at the 1:53 mark to put the game out of reach for the Wolverines.
Marody extended his multi-point streak to seven games after recording two assists in tonight's game. He has tallied 17 points (3G, 14A) over that span. This is the longest streak since Tyler Motte recorded multiple points in seven games Jan. 15 to Feb. 12, 2016 (12G, 8A).
Dancs also extended his point streak to seven games after tallying a pair of assists tonight, giving him 12 points (5G, 7A) over that stretch. After his two goals tonight, Calderone has now found the back of the net in three straight games, with five total tallies over that span.
The Wolverines fall to 72-58-10 overall in the all-time series against the Badgers dating back to 1923.
Michigan and Wisconsin will conclude their weekend series tomorrow night (Saturday, Nov. 18) in Madison. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST.
