MADISON, Wis. -- The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team rallied in the third period from a one-goal deficit, then won the shootout for the extra conference point in a 4-4 tie over No. 9-ranked Wisconsin on Saturday night at the Kohl Center.
Junior forward Cooper Marody and senior captain Tony Calderone each tallied shootout goals while Hayden Lavigne stopped both Wisconsin chances to secure the extra Big Ten point. Michigan has now played in four overtime contests in its first six conference games this season.
Marody continued his hot start as he found the back of the net, high glove-side 1:36 into the contest off a beautiful cross-ice pass from freshman defenseman Quinn Hughes.
Less than six minutes later it would be fellow "DMC" linemate Calderone with his third goal of the weekend series from the top of the faceoff circle off the draw to extend U-M's lead to 2-0. Marody won the faceoff and was credited with the assist -- extending his multi-point streak to eight games.
The Badgers cut the Maize and Blue lead in half with four seconds remaining in the opening stanza on a tip-in from Ryan Wagner off a shot from the point on the power play.
Wisconsin took advantage of another power-play opportunity midway through the second period when Linus Weissbach found the back of the net from the left faceoff dot at the 10:51 mark.
It would be Weissbach again for the hosts at the 14:45 mark of the second to give Wisconsin its first lead of the night (3-2), picking up his own rebound off a blocked shot in front of the net.
Michigan evened the score at three apiece, 2:59 into the final period when junior forward Jake Slaker one-timed a Hughes feed in the slot for his seventh goal of the season.
The Wolverines regained the lead off a failed breakout attempt by the Badgers at the 12:03 mark of the final period. Sophmore defenseman Luke Martin threw the loose puck back in the zone to senior forward Niko Porikos, who immediately found a streaking Nick Pastujov in the high-slot for his third marker of the year.
With an empty net for the extra attacker, Wisconsin tied it at -4 with 1:10 remaining in the contest off the stick of Cameron Hughes in front of a crowded U-M net.
Marody extended his multi-point streak to eight games after recording one goal and one assist in tonight's game -- tallying 19 points (4G, 15A) over that span. He becomes the first Wolverine to record multiple points in eight consecutive games since Brian Wiseman did so during the 1993-94 season, when he tallied 21 points (6G, 15A) between Dec. 4, 1993-Jan. 7, 1994.
The series now stands at 72-58-11 overall in the all-time matchup against the Badgers dating back to 1923.
The Maize and Blue will return to Ann Arbor next weekend for a two-game series with rival Ohio State (Nov. 24-25). The Wolverines went 2-2 against the Buckeyes last season, bringing Michigan's record in the all-time series to 81-38-13. The Wolverines are 40-16-7 all-time against Ohio State at home.
