WOLVERINE BITES
• Graduate student Adam Coon earned the Big Ten's Co-Wrestler of the Week honors for his 5-2 decision against Arizona State's Tanner Hall last Friday (Nov. 10). Coon earned the bulk of his points on a four-point throw at the end of the first period. He improved to 4-0 on the season and already has two wins over nationally ranked opponents, adding to a pin against Northwestern's 14th-ranked Conan Jennings at the MSU Open (Nov. 5).
• Coon improved his career record to 91-13 over his four seasons at Michigan, with nearly half of his wins (45) coming with bonus points. He needs just nine more wins to become the 36th Wolverine wrestler to reach 100 in his career.
• Junior/sophomore Logan Massa earned his second win over Arizona State's sixth-ranked Anthony Valencia in as many weeks but had to rally -- and twice fight off his back early -- to earn an 11-3 major decision. Massa has defeated Valencia four times over the last two seasons, earning bonus points in three matchups.
• Graduate student Kevin Beazley won in his Michigan dual-meet debut, earning a 7-2 decision against Arizona State's Cade Belshay at 197 pounds behind takedowns in the first and second periods.
• Five Wolverines remain unbeaten in official varsity competition this season. Massa, fifth-year senior Domenic Abounader and Beazley all own 5-0 records and Coon is 4-0, while junior/sophomore Stevan Micic is 1-0 after missing the MSU Open due to the All-Star Classic exhibition.
• Freshmen Drew Mattin, Jelanie Embree and Zachery Nemec captured individual titles while competing unattached at the EMU Open last Saturday (Nov. 11). Embree and Nemec claimed the 184-pound and heavyweight freshman/sophomore titles -- it was Embree's collegiate debut -- while Mattin won in the open division at 125 pounds. Among Mattin's wins were two over nationally ranked opponents -- a 6-3 decision over Edinboro's No. 6 Sean Russell and a 6-5 decision over Northern Illinois' No. 14 Brock Hudkins.
• Nine of the Wolverines' 14 dual-meet opponents ranked among the top 25 teams in the National Wrestling Coaches Association's preseason poll, most notably five top-10 teams in No. 1 Penn State, No. 2 Ohio State, No. 6 Minnesota, No. 8 Iowa and No. 10 Lehigh. FloWrestling identified the Wolverines' 2017-18 dual-meet schedule as the second toughest in the nation.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
Lehigh: The Mountain Hawks are off to a 1-0 start after defeating Bucknell, 36-2, last Friday (Nov. 10). Lehigh returns two All-Americans from last year in NCAA champion Darian Cruz and Scott Parker. Lehigh boasts seven nationally ranked wrestlers, most notably No. 4 Cruz (125), No. 3 Parker (133) and No. 6 Ryan Preisch (184). Michigan leads the all-time series against Lehigh, 25-15, and has claimed each of the last two meetings, including a 24-13 decision last season in Ann Arbor.
LAST TIME OUT
The Wolverines defeated No. 11 Arizona State, 21-18, in their season dual opener last Friday (Nov. 10) at Detroit Catholic Central High School. Michigan claimed six of 10 individual matches, earning major decisions from Logan Massa (165), Stevan Micic (133) and Sal Profaci (141), who clinched the dual win with a 12-0 win with one bout remaining. Massa defeated No. 6-ranked Anthony Valencia, 11-3, while Adam Coon (Hwt) edged No. 4 Tanner Hall, 5-2, in two of the dual's marquee matches. [ Full Recap ]
