ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team settled for a tie against the No. 4 Minnesota Golden Gophers, 6-6 (2-1 shootout), on Saturday night (Nov. 11), coming back from a four-goal deficit.
Senior captain Tony Calderone and junior Brendan Warren led the way for the Wolverines with two points each as Michigan erased a 4-0 second-period deficit to force overtime against the Gophers.
The Gophers seized control of the game early, scoring 9:34 into play, when freshman Sam Rossini found the back of the net, with the assist coming from sophomore Ryan Pitlick. Later in the period, junior Tyler Sheehy made it 2-0, again off a feed from Pitlick. Less than two minutes later, Minnesota struck again, as sophomore Ryan Lindgren capitalized on a pass from junior Tommy Novak.
Sophomore Hayden Lavigne replaced sophomore Jack LaFontaine to start the second period and held off pressure from the Gophers early in the period before Novak slipped one past him to put Minnesota ahead, 4-0. Michigan responded moments later with a goal from Calderone, assisted by junior Cooper Marody.Â
A Michigan penalty gave Minnesota a power play with just over 13 minutes remaining in the second period. While the Gophers were attacking, a crucial turnover led to a Michigan unassisted goal from sophomore Will Lockwood.
With 11:02 remaining, Minnesota scored again, when freshman Brannon McManus capitalized off a rebound from a Jack Sadek shot.
Seconds after the ensuing faceoff, Lockwood brought the puck into the Golden Gophers' zone, finding sophomore Jake Slaker who scored, bringing the Wolverines back within two.
Early in the third period, a pass from Sheehy set up a Minnesota goal scored by Pitlick to give the Golden Gophers a 6-3 lead.
With seven minutes left in regulation, Warren weaved through defenders and found the net with his backhand off an assist from graduate student Alex Roos. Michigan's momentum increased when sophomore Luke Martin scored his first goal of the season, bringing the Wolverines within one goal of Minnesota.
With 1:12 remaining in the third, Calderone scored his second goal of the night off a rebound from Dexter Dancs, and the game was tied at 6. Marody tallied the secondary assist, extending his multi-point game streak to six consecutive games.
A scoreless final minute sent the Wolverines and Golden Gophers to overtime. The last time Michigan had three straight overtime games was Jan. 26-Feb. 2, 2008.
The Wolverines had a few chances to end the game in overtime, including a man advantage, but came up empty handed. The game ended in a 6-6 tie, but went to a shootout to determine which team would get the additional Big Ten point.
Minnesota came away from the shootout victorious, 2-1 in 3 rounds, with goals coming from Pitlick and Sheehy. Marody scored the Wolverines' only shootout goal.
The Maize and Blue will hit the road the next weekend for a series with Wisconsin (Nov. 17-18). The Wolverines went 1-3 against the Badgers last season, brining Michigan's record in the all-time series to 72-57-10.
